coachella!

the word of the weekend was OVERWHELMING. so many people, so HOT, so many bands. OVERWHELMING.

there were aspects of this past weekend that i loved, aspects that i loathed and aspects that i just ended up accepting.

the bad first...there are 88,000 people there. and i do not like crowds. i am not a fan of waiting and i am not a fan of fighting to get to the front of the stage. i LOVE LOVE LOVE small venue shoes (2500 or less) where the setting is intimate and even from the very back you can still see the stage and see what's going on. this was the only sad part for me. i wouldn't want to pay $400 to basically watch all the the shows on a big screen. i could stay home and watch youtube. but...i get it. i do get it. there are a TON of people there...it just reminded me why i don't really do festivals or arena shows. and i ended up seeing a lot of the stuff on the big screen-- like the shins. and i love the shins. i would've really liked to see the shins closer up.

now...that being said...i had an amazing time! i fucking LOVE live music. LOVE it. and coachella has been a dream of mine for years. just to experience it all. and there is a LOT to experience! from the music, to the food, to the people...so much. and my favorite thing about these kind of festivals is you get exposed to so much new music! grouplove, fitz and the tantrums, WU LYF, frank ocean...all new stuff i hadn't listened to before that i LOVED.

Friday:
Grouplove (whom my friend carin was dying to see) and they were fantastic!!
Girls - based on a friend's rec
WU LYF- based on a friends rec. he was AWESOME! he is a hottie- kinda reminds me of david beckham. and his outfit was phenomenal. a jean jacket- no shirt, soccer shorts and black knee high dress socks. he looked ridiculous. yet totally rocked it!
M Ward- LOVE!
Arctic Monkeys
Frank Ocean-- based on a friends rec...SOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (he's the guy that sings in that Jay Z song from the Safe House trailer!)
The Black Keys- they were awesome and fun. they did a levon helm tribute and brought out john fogarty. that was pretty cool!
i wanted to see M83 but they played at the same time as the keys so i had to make a decision. and i really wanted to see swedish house mafia but we were so exhausted that i couldn't stay up anymore. they were playing 30 mins AFTER the keys at like 11:30pm and i just couldn't do it.

saturday:
childish gambino-- he was one of the acts i went to coachella to specifically see and he did not disappoint. he was amazing and super talented and did so much free style rapping. the only drawback was he was on the mainstage at 2:50pm which meant watching him in the sun. even though i was super sunscreened up i was so nervous my back and shoulders were frying. so nervous. it was 110 degrees out. layering was NOT an option. i was wearing a romper the lightest thing i own that covers the least amount of skin and i still was beyond sweaty. also had to watch by myself. :(
AWOLNATION- so good!
Kaiser Chiefs
the head and the heart- from seattle!!! they were so much fun. (had to watch by myself)
martin solveig (had to watch by myself)-- but it was still fun to dance like a club kid.
Noel Gallagher's high flying birds- they were ok. they played an oasis song which was pretty awesome!
the shins - so chill and so good.
i missed feist and bon iver...2 that i really wanted to see...but david guetta played at the same time and he was a MUST. i also went to this by myself and i kinda felt dumb for dancing and being crazy all by myself but it was still totally worth it. he was so much fun! he brought sia out and she sang titanium and wild ones. i really wished my friends were with me so we could all dance our asses off together. and his tent was so cool! so many lights!!

sunday:
beats antique - so good!
fitz and the tantrums- this was a must see for carin, and i have had several friends rec to me to go see them and they did not disappoint. they were so much fun!!
the hives- we moved to the beer garden for this...to hydrate and go the bathroom and eat and drink more alcohol. and i like the hives but i'm not a huge fan or anything...so we watched from the big screens they had set up (the beer garden is pretty far from the main stage) and they were AMAZING. they might be one of my fave performances of the whole weekend. they had so much energy. even from all the way out where we were at you could just feel the energy. i ended up dancing...and so did half the garden. they were just that good!
gotye- for like 2 seconds. his tent was too crowded with fair weather fans who JUST wanted to hear 'somebody that i used to know' and you couldn't hear him so we just gave up.
justice- so much fun!
girl talk- PHENOMENAL!!!! i LOVE him! he's a mashups DJ. and he was SO MUCH FUN! we bought glo bracelets and danced our asses off to him. i wanted to see beirut and calvin harris and company flow...but girl talk was WAY to fun to miss any of it.
florence and the machine- she was good...but i would really, really rather see her in a smaller venue. i'm ALMOST sad i missed avicii to see her. but she was still good. we also watched her on the screens from super far away. and i was annoyed at having to be so far away, and tired and just practically DONE with the weekend at that point. (3 days with the same girl in the hot ass heat will do that too you!)
dre and snoop...LOVE. i was not excited to see them. i wasn't. i mean they are not relevant anymore. but my 15 yr old self really wanted to see them. and i have never seen them live, so we went. we were super far from the stage - yet still packed in with people- and i couldn't see the stage AT ALL. i could barely see the screens. (assholes putting their girlfriend's on shoulders ruins it for the shortys ok!) but...it was all worth it. took me back to my college years. i knew all the songs and all the words. and it felt slightly weird to be screaming "187 on a mother fucking cop" like a LOT. but i still had a ton of fun. and they brought out wiz khalifa and eminem and 50 cent! and i felt so OLD because a lot of the people around us did NOT know the 50 cent songs. (i'm sorry, i LOVE 50 and "in da club" is my jam!) eminem was awesome too. i have always wanted to see him live so it was a treat to get to see him perform. i didn't care about the tupac hologram. maybe if i could see the stage it would've been cool, but watching it on the big screen...it was like watching it on youtube. meh.

i went with just one friend. we met a few of her friends here and there. but it was mostly just her and me. so there were a few things that i had to go see by myself. which was kind of a bummer. and she is really lazy and really wanted to just stay in one place. and i LOVE to walk around, so that was frustrating too. i mean i get that it's hot...i get that. and it took a day to get acclimated. i thought i was going to die friday. just the 20 min walk from the car to the site was overwhelming and i ended up drinking 2 bottles of water as soon as we got in. i did not hydrate enough beforehand. but i also learned my lesson and was well prepared for sat/sun. and at that point was like i don't care if i have to leave you i want to see stuff.

all in all it was a fantastic trip. it was nice to get away from work and real life and just eat and drink and be merry in the fantastic sunshine.

sorry if this was long and rambly. :)
