"Best of luck, gentlemen," was one of the last things I heard before I practically plumetted into an almost certain death. That's what war was about these days, right? My head turned to the left when I heard the platform lift up from the side of the boat, then it lowered itself under the water. Our commander was giving us our "last salute" while the helicopters carrying the rest of the soldiers was flying overhead. I raised my shaking hand to my forehead as my commander stepped in front of me. He saluted me, then grasped my shoulder in order for me to direct my full attention on him.
"Go get 'em," he told me as I brought my hand down in a salute. I pulled my backpack straps over my shoulders steady, and within ten seconds of stepping off the platform of the ship, I was completely submerged under water.
"Come on, come on, come on!" I heard voices echo each other as soldiers screamed for assistance. Two sets of arms dove beneath the water and lifted me up by my under arms.
"Current's getting stronger, Gaskarth," one of them spoke as we reached solid ground, and I simply nodded. I was too tired to even think, let alone make casual conversation.
"For fuck's sake, you're a twig! How did they even let you travel to here?"
"Where are we?" The sound of my hoarse voice was surprising to me; I didn't think I was unconscious for too long.
The soldier on my left chuckled. "You don't know? How did they just drop you off to war without telling you?"
I rolled my eyes and sighed heavily. "I know we're in Vietnam, but where are we right now?"
"Hanoi. Gulf of Tonkin ring a bell to you?" the man on my right asked. I nodded, even though my headache was pounding. "They shipped us off right after we caught word that the boats were attacked," I explained, and they both made an "ah" sound at the same time.
"Listen, we're only about three miles from base. You good to walk?" the one on the left asked me, and I nodded at him. "I'm fine," I told 'em, then they let me go.
"Got a girl back home?" one of them asked me (I didn't pay attention to who) and I smiled slightly. "My momma count?"
"Oh, you're a momma's boy, huh?" he asked and I laughed slightly. "I'd say I am too. It was hard leavin' her. My girl, though, she was confident in my return."
I picked my head up to look at him. "Think you'll get home?" I asked, and the happy smile he had on his face faded.
"Soldier can only hope, right?"

I lost track of the time from then on, but the sun was down by the time we made it to base. Most of the group was already there, setting their tents up for the night.
"Think you're on guard tonight, Gaskarth," one of my comrades told me, and I gave them a questioning glance. "Our enemy's been sneakin' up on us lately; attackin' our base while we sleep. You just can't sleep tonight, but you get the morning to sleep. Jus' alarm us if they attack." I nodded, and then they left me alone with the seven others on guard tonight.
"How'd you end up here?" I heard a voice ask, and I turned my head slightly to see a young man, like myself, sitting on the middle of the log. He was staring at the fire, so it took me a moment to figure out who he was talking to.
I shrugged. "Selective Service Act. Also, nothin' much back home. Got my ma, but she's got four others to worry about, too. She'll be too busy to even think about me." He didn't press for more information, for which I was thankful. How crazy would it have appeared if I said that I came here on a mission to die?
I, however, did press. "What about you? Why're you here?" With a small bitter laugh, he shook his head slightly. "Got bored," was his only answer.
"I'm Alex, by the way," I said, offerring my hand out for him to shake as I sat next to him.
He ignored my handshake in favor of placing a beer in my hand, then hitting it lightly with his own bottle. "Name's Jack. Jack Barakat."
