It had been one of the first days in a while that Peter Gaskarth was actually home during the day. As nice as the man seemed to be, Jack felt as if he could cut the tension between him and his chilren at the dinner table with a knife. He put the two on such a high pedastal, saying how more kids their age should be exactly like them. Lillian and Alex should have been proud, but the guilt on their faces that was trying to be hidden was clearly visible.

"Lillian, I apologize that the family keeps canceling. Your soon-to-be husband is quite excited to meet you, though," Mr. Gaskarth said before raising the cup of tea to his lips. Jack watched as Lillian tensed up and briefly nodded to her father, before letting her eyes wander elsewhere.

"You will never believe what I saw last night walking home from work! There were two men walking down the street in front of me...holding hands!" Peter exclaimed, practicing roaring with laughter. "It was a sight to see!"

Jack's eyes flickered over to Alex, watching the pained look on his face as he sunk down on his seat.

"What do you call them these days?"

"Dad..." Lillian tried to interrupt.

"What's the word, faggot? Isn't that the term you youngsters use these days?" Jack watched as Alex looked at Lillian in desperation, but then he looked back over at his dad.

"Yeah, that's what you call them," Alex mumbled.

It surprised Jack that Mr. Gaskarth didn't even pay attention to Alex's mood, instead the man turned to Jack, listing off all the chores he wanted done in the house by tomorrow night. Jack listened to his words, but his mind didn't even bother processing them. He opted to focus on the boy across the dinner table, looking as if he was ready to cry.

Peter Gaskarth soon excused himself from the table, saying how work needed to get done in his office. As soon as he left, Alex also excused himself and went straight to his room.

"Things are so confusing, Jack," Lillian explained, holding her face in her hands. "I wish I could tell you everything, but I can't. That's up to Alex."

Jack nodded in understanding as he sipped the last bit of his tea.

Lillian let out a sigh as she pushed her chair out in order to stand up and grab her coat. "Look, I'm going to meet Robert at the coffee shop. Could you just...watch Alex for me?"

Jack nodded once again, causing the girl to beam at him. As soon as she was out the door, Jack collected all of the dishes up and placed them on the counter in order to wash them later. They could be cleaned later. Right now, Alex was the main priority.

Jack walked up the stairs two at a time before reaching Alex's room. He knocked once before receiving the 'okay!' to go in. He was expecting to see Alex curled under the covers, or perhaps even just sitting at the end of the bed. What he certainly wasn't expecting was Alex standing to the side of his bed, journal in hand.

"Jack...did you read my journal?"

Alex's question certainly caught Jack off guard. He couldn't think of the right words to say. His mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water, no sound coming out of him.

"Hey," Alex whispered, dropping the book and stepping over to Jack, "it's okay. I'm not mad."

"H-How did you find out?"

"It was turned the wrong way under my mattress." Alex then stepped away to sit on the bed.

"You're really not mad?"

Alex chuckled as he shook his head. "I'm actually kind of relieved, to be honest."

Jack walked forward slowly, sitting on the bed next to Alex. "What do you mean?"

"I've had to keep everything bottled up for so long."

"What about Lillian?"

Alex laughed bitterly. "Lillian doesn't even know half of it. Nobody knows what I go through."

"That's a pretty horrible way to live." Upon realizing what he said, Jack's eyes went wide as he started to stammer out an apology.

"It's okay, I agree with you. But I guess I owe you an explanation, huh?" Alex asked, moving to lay down on his bed. Jack mimicked him, then he turned on his side to get a better look at Alex.

"You don't owe me anything, Alex."

Alex frowned, followed by a shake of the head. "Jack, I think you deserve to know why I have been so rude to you."

Jack shrugged. Maybe he did deserve that explanation, then.

Alex closed his eyes and took a deep breath through his nose. "It was some time back in March...I had to attend one of my father's meetings with him in the center of the city. I think it was about the future leaders of big businesses in New York. Obviously, my father owns a big business. Anyways, that's when I met him.." Alex paused, taking more deep breaths. He could practically hear Alex's heart beating out of his chest. Jack grabbed the other boy's hand in his own. At this, he could actually feel Alex relax.

"Zack Merrick, that's his name. I'm sure you've heard of the Merrick family; they own atleast ninety eight percent of the factories in the state. I digress. Zachary...he was so charming and kind. At the time, I had no idea that I liked young men instead of ladies. Something about Zachary, though, just pulled me in. He seemed to be showing a lot of interest in me, so I knew it was safe to assume that he too liked boys. Alexander then opened his eyes to look at Jack, revealing how upset he was.

"Alex, if you want to stop..."

"No, no, I need to tell someone about this." Jack just nodded, urging Alex on. He gave his hand a tight squeeze, and in response Alex let a smile ghost across his face.

"We just skipped the friends stage completely. He kissed me, and after that it was like some fairy tale. He would climb through my window at night, or I would make some horribly bad excuse just to go to his house. Nobody knew of us, but it was alright. We had eachother. Lillian knew about us, though. She would help us so we could meet in private...We were in love, though. It killed me that I couldn't let anyone else know about us,just because it's some sin for two men to be together."

By the way Alex was tensing up, Jack could tell the worst part was coming.

"It was early last month when my life just sort of...fell apart. One night in my room, things between us were getting sort of heated, let's say. Then, Zack attempted to unbutton my pants, but I told him no. I said no, Jack!" With the last sentence, Alex let his tears pour out, hugging Jack close to him.

"Alex, he didn't ra-" Jack cut himself off as soon as he felt Alex nod his head.

"After, he told me he didn't love me anymore. He said I was worthless." As soon as Jack heard this, he instantly sat up and pulled Alex onto his lap.

"Don't believe him."

"Please just don't go anywhere, Jack," Alex pleaded, leaning back to get a good look at Alex's face.

"Hey," Jack paused to wipe both of his thumbs across Alex's tear stained cheeks, "I'm not going anywhere, I promise you."
