Peter is halfway down the stairs when Neal calls out.

He's still spending most of his time in or near the house -- he still isn't ready to go back to work, and he doesn't trust himself not to get lost if he wanders too far. So he spends his time trying to jog his memory, trying to make things come back faster, though they've all realized by now that it's pointless. Nothing comes back on its own.

He keeps trying anyway, because what else can he do?

"In here," he calls, just to let Neal know he's there, and picks up his pace, heading into the kitchen.

He takes a moment to look him over, check for signs of anything worse than usual, before he crouches down next to Neal. "Need a hand?"

"I'm good," he assures, opening his eyes to look up at Peter. "I like the view from here."

Pushing himself upright on his good hand, he winces a little. Between being generally sore and getting a little beat up on his last task, Neal is ready to enter the world of pain manage medication and never come out again.

"Anything interesting happen while I was gone?" He still hasn't let go of the candle in his bleeding hand but he's not quite ready to do that. The roads leave him wary uncomfortable with looking behind him and asking for any sort of help. Letting the candle go is much easier usually but he's developed the habit of having it on him almost all the time. He claims it's because he wants to be ready to go if he needs to but in all truth, the candle is a comfort in it's own way, a reminder that he can find his way through the darkness.

As an afterthought he adds, "What time is it"

He checks his watch before he answers -- his sense of time has gotten better, recently, but he still doesn't trust it. "Almost two in the afternoon. And no, nothing interesting happened."

He glances at the candle, and away again almost immediately. Neal's hand shoulder probably be bandaged, but he's not going to touch the candle to take it away from him. Not that Neal holding it is particularly comforting; anything that could bring someone back there isn't something Peter wants in the house, let alone in someone's hand.

He doesn't mention it, though, just asks, "Hungry? Or do you want to sleep first?"

"Two," he echoes, considering a minute. "I could still go in if I hurried" He doesn't entirely sound like he wants to go but when he's home, he tries to keep up work the best he can, that way the pressure isn't left on Elizabeth ( ... )
