I've been obsessed with sewing things (not clothing) lately. All brought on by making baby related things for my pregnant Sister-in-Law. She's now received burp cloths in an interesting shape (so that it's not bunched around the neck and drapes over the front and back and isn't freaking huge) with a little bit of embroidery (cause my sewing machine is awesome like that), and a baby changing mat, complete with a vinyl interior that can easily be wiped down and two pockets that can be used for diapers and wipes. It even has a handle so that it can be easily transported!
Anyway, as a result, I've been trying new/easy things that have been on Pinterest, with relative ease. And I finally got the courage to try making the Weekender Bag by Amy Butler. I purchased the pattern early this year, and it's just been sitting there, mocking me. A bunch of Pinterest pins told me that it was super difficult, and that you really had to want it. But I did it! I purchased all of the materials on day one, cut all of the fabric over a day or two (not cause it took me that long, but because I took my sweet ass time), and then started and finished over a weekend, plus a Monday evening. Here's what it looks like!
That's the piano behind it, to give you a bit of scale. I was questioning the two fabrics together immediately after purchase (cause who doesn't like buyers's remorse?), but I think it turned out really well. Also, I made all the piping by hand. Not as difficult as I expected, really.
A better view of the handles. I made them longer than what the pattern specifies because I like putting things over my shoulder, and because a Pinterest tutorial said that it was a good idea.
I added magnetic closures to each of the side panels, just because I wanted to. They weren't part of the pattern either, but were surprisingly easy to figure out. I hadn't done it before!
I added pockets to the inside because I agreed with a couple Pinterest tutorials that said that what's the point of a bag without internal pockets! The only thing I regret is that I didn't put interfacing in the pockets to make them a little stiffer. I probably should have lined those pockets as well. Oh well.
To be honest, this was easier than I thought it would be. I only had one sewing machine needle injury!
After that, I decided to create a few pouches/bags that I could use to organize the bag once I start to pack for whatever weekend trips that I take. So I've created a zippered, flat bottomed pouch, and a zippered box. Those two items are done (using leftover material from the above bag.
Now I'm working on a zippered circle bag thing. I'm not sure really what to call it. It's not from the same material - I decied last minute to make it, so I started using some scraps from other things. One of which is fabric from a quilt Grandma made for me out of t-shirts.
But I'll post pictures, I promise! Maybe I'll even post pictures of the other two bags I've done.
All because I'm obsessed... :)
