Still not the major entry I had planned--feel yucky--this will be brief. I really must jot this down though, as it's just a little to bizarre to pass by.
Working at a library can be more surreal that you might expect. For example, Sunday I came to work and found (standing in the youth department across from where I work)...ready?
A llama. Really. A live one--white, haughty-looking, very shaggy...named Captain. I have no idea WHY there was a llama in the library (by the way, there *is* a book of that title), but there he was. I went over and spoke to him (and his handler), gave him a pat and retreated. He wasn't the friendiest animal I've ever made aquaintance with--and hey, they spit. I didn't want to be on the receiving end of anything liquid.
Yesterday, I came into the building and found the lobby filled with balloons, Cajun music playing VERY high volumn and people handing out cake, beads and coffee...oh, and Moon Pies, of course. I scuttled around them as quickly as possible (raging headache was still in progress)--I wasn't feeling festive. It reminded me of my last job. My former supervisor LOVED all things New Orleans. We had Madi Gras celebration every year in the call center. I do tend to work at unusual places.
They are having a Southern writers thingie this weekend (yes, another weekend I've got to work). I heard rumor that a well known AL writer might be there. I assume that would be either Mark Childress or Robert McCammon. I am in awe of both--love their books. I've actually spoken to Mark Childress via his website in the past--nice person. I doubt I'll get to see anyone in person--servants don't mingle with the nobility...and my job is definitely of the gofer persuasion.
One last bit. It was suggested I be "more abstract" with my job. How does one do that and shelve books? Should I wear a tux to work? A clown suit? Learn to juggle the books? Dance down the aisles? *sigh*
