Bodega by Khalil Almustafa | print | email
The bodega is a self-hating mechanism that is an under-stated staple of young, urban culture. The product that is sold at the bodega have a dramatic impact on the physical, emotional and mental health of people in the neighborhoods they profit from.
"We face chemical warfare all day, every day."
Afrikans in Bondage, from the upcoming CD, CounterIntelligence
The Bodega could possibly be the most deadly force in our communities. At the bodega, you could buy cigarettes, coffee, soda, quarter-waters, juice made with only 5% real juice, whole milk, grease-soaked Bacon Egg & Cheese sandwiches, a gallon of malt liquor (cheaper than a gallon of water), lab-made candy, cakes, and chips, bologna and processed American cheese sandwiches, with nutrition-less iceberg lettuce, on a bleached, white hero, with x-tra mayo lotto tickets, and newspapers as fictional as the "food."
And your WIC checks are acceptable, as the 15 signs say plastered all over the outside glass windows and doors, amongst photos of half-naked women posing next to bottles of Smirnoff Ice, St. Ides, & Kool Cigarettes.
The sign outside says, "grocery," but the 20 grocery items available are all dusty, near-expiration date and overpriced.
The sugar from the infinite list of candy is a crack for kids. The candy is clearly made to prepare children for their adult addictions, like the Philly-blunt shaped gum and the candy cigarettes.
You don't have to be a raw foodist to know that the food and drugs we take into our bodies everyday is slowly killing us. Most of this stuff ain't even real. I never seen a Cheese Doodle tree before.
Where are the fresh fruit & flower stands that blanket Midtown Manhattan. They will not be here unless we take action.
Action Plan
1.Start with self by cutting out at least one addiction.
2.Talk to your family about these silent killers where we live.
3.Find alternative snacks for yourself, and let people know about them.
4.Build up some businesses offering people some more healthy alternatives.
