I am stupid
I just want you guys to know what a complete idiot I am:
So, I'm living in this new awesome apartment with my wonderful roommates Mark and Adam and Amanda. We have two bedrooms and two bathrooms... and a beautiful kitchen that I'm obviously still learning how to use, because I lived in the dorms for the last two years. So...
Today, I wanted to make Adam and myself some Hungry Man scalloped potatoes for dinner. So I prepared the box mix and added the milk and the water and the butter and put it all in what I thought would be a really great casserole dish.
Then I put my creation in the oven at 450F and started waiting for the prescribed 25 minutes. But after about 5 minutes, my roommates and I started noticing a horrible smell. I was poking my head all over the kitchen, trying to figure out where it was coming from. The microwave? The stove vent?
Then I realized... it was the oven.
And the smell? It was burning rubber. BECAUSE I PUT A POT WITH RUBBER HANDLES IN THE OVEN AND THEY WERE MELTING.
It was the worst smell in the whole world. I called my dad (a chemist) and he made fun of me, but assured me the fumes were not fatally toxic. We opened all the windows to ventilate the house before we all suffocated. Dad told us to turn up the oven heat to 500F to burn away the evil odor before we tried cooking anything else.
The good news is we transported the potatoes to a new OVEN-SAFE baking pan and we were still able to have our Hungry Man, though it was a bit later than we'd anticipated.
So, I learned a valuable lesson today about proper kitchen safety and made a complete ass of myself in the process. Who knew? You can't put rubber in the oven.
