I didn't write about my last weekend in here, but that's just tough shit, get over it...
Anyways, this weekend was amazing.
On Saturday we bummed around town, had a few beers and watched the football results on Sky (more on that later). I bought the Spice Girls first album because I'm THAT cool, and then we had to attend a rather grown-up party for a friend of a friend who is leaving to travel Australia. It was mainly a family thing and I did feel a little out of place, but there were a few laughs so it wasn't too bad. It fizzled out at about 9ish, so off into town we went for a few more drinks. I was extremely happy seeing as Aston Villa had won, courtesy of our new signing Milan Baros. Woo and indeed fucking hoo!
So the alcohol flowed (literally, as an entire pint of cider was spilled all over me) and then it was to the kebab house. There were lots of chavs hanging around, so imagine my horror when one of them turns to me and starts moving in my direction. He stretched out a hand and said "VILLA FAN!" and I knew I was safe in this man's hands. I gave his hand a shake and we discussed the win and our prospects for the season. Oh it was good. I did a little wee, but that could have been because of the alcohol.
Anyway, I had THE nicest kebab I think I've ever had in my entire life (it was in like, a wrap, and smothered in mayonnaise) and then it was home to crash out. I did have a toothache so I didn't get the best sleep ever, but hey.
Sunday was pretty mellow, and we went into Peterborough for a little shopping trip. My intention was to buy a Villa shirt (still on a high ya see) and have 'Baros' printed on the back. But because everyone else in the world hates Aston Villa, there were no shirts on sale so I decided to have a good spend in HMV and Virgin. Here's what I came back with:
Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger (fina-fucking-lly!)
Peep Show series 1
Black Books series 3 (fina-fucking-lly!)
Brewster's Millions (which I should have seen but never have)
The Best of Not the Nine O Clock News volume 2
Then we went to see Dukes of Hazzard which, by all accounts, is a fucking amazing film. In fact it's the sort I want to go and see again, and may well do so. Johnny Knoxville is just a very funny man, whether he talks or not. Seann William Scott is great, naturally. And I was rather surprised at Jessica Simpson (who I hate) seeing as she holds her own and doesn't piss on the legacy of our Daisy.
Then, and here's where the fun starts, we decide to go for a pizza and we see that there's an offer on - any pizza, any size, for £5.99 - and that's what we go for. A 12" steak, onion and mushroom pizza will do nicely Mr Domino. Kthx. We're told it'll be about 40 minutes so nip next door for a pint. We get back to Domino's and the girl says "sorry, there's no steak, so we've put beef on, is that okay?" like she even needs to ask. We tell her it is, and then she goes "actually, to compensate, here's another of the same" so we had TWO 12" pizzas for £6. Mental. Well, it excited me. I did a little wee, but that could have been the attractive lady who served us.
Back home and we watched some Black Books, Peep Show, then crashed out. More toothache, but a better night's sleep in general.
(Bored much?)
Monday saw the Spalding Family Fun Day (boo) and Music Festival (yay). We got there at 2ish and walked straight in (oh yeah, free baybee!) and headed for the barbecue. I had a greasy cheeseburger and then it was...the beer tent. We sniffed it out and bought two overpriced pints of lager and watched a few local bands piss all over Green Day and Bowling For Soup songs. They covered the Darkness too, but that was an improvement on the original. Not that it's difficult to improve on the Darkness. You could record yourself having a shit and it'd sound better.
Anyway, we looked around and realised that people were bringing their own alcohol in to save money, so decided to go over to Sainsbury's. We hadn't been checked on the way in, so we knew we'd be fine with a few cans. Wrong.
We came back loaded with cheap beer and the security guard is like "can I check your bag please for GLASS bottles". We told him it was just cans and he goes "nah, no alcohol allowed I'm afraid". Cunt. We took the cans back home and trapsed back to the festival site. Did we get checked? Did we fuck? Absolutely shitty double standards. We put it down to the fact there were local councillors standing nearby when we had the beer, so they were making sure the guards were actually checking. Oh well, it's not like the cans didn't get sunk later.
So it was going to be a day of expensive beer, but we had the cash, so we couldn't complain. We got ourselves some more beer and sat down to enjoy some more music.
Guy Tortora Band - Hailing from California, sounding more like real southern US stuff. Songs like "Two Fried Eggs and Ham on the Side" and you see what I mean, yeah? They were alright, just a bit boring after a while.
Auburn - They've supported Sophie Ellis-Bextor dontcha know. Oh aye. They were pretty good, nice mellow stuff for a sunny afternoon, but nothing that would really grab you elsewhere.
Abi Moore - A nice young talent (and gorgeous to boot!) in the acoustic tent. We only caught the end of her set, but there were a few jazzy numbers, so she's like Joss Stone, only y'know, talented. And provided money and time allows, we'll be off to see her again in September.
Acoustic Chumbawumba - Naturally, you'd expect these to be quite fantastic. And they were. Totally acoustic and at times completely acapella, they played an hour of moving songs. Pretty much all of which were political-themed. There was a great song about homophobia being the worst disease - too true - and even an anti-Thatcher song, which is always good.
The Popes - We were kind of expecting Shane McGowan to be there, but the likelihood was that he wouldn't show up. He didn't, but that didn't detract from the performance. Two songs in the lead singer gets told to stop swearing (he's Irish for fucks sake, what were they expecting). He didn't, so fair play to the chap. It was quite funny seeing as the very next song after he'd been told to stop had the chorus "I might have fucked your missus but I never fucked your daughter". Brilliant. Their set was well over an hour, featuring songs like Sleepless Nights, Donegal Express, R U Lookin' @ Me and Rock 'n' Roll Paddy. A great showband who I want to hear more from, and am ashamed I haven't done so previously.
Before The Popes, we went to the bar for more drinkage and bumped into one of the singers from Chumbawumba. Being the little starfuckers we are we had a little chat and told her we really enjoyed their set. She went on her way, and I have a 5p of hers that she left on the bar. Yes, I was excited. Yes, I am sad.
So there you go. This is pretty pointless as about 3 people will read it. I don't care.

Bye.
