sweet jesus it hurts when you get stung by a bee. today i was stung for the first time in my life while i was swimming laps in my pool. my arm went out of the water for a stroke and came back into the water with a goddamn stinger in it. ouch.
tonight was a goodbye party for internship mentor at COPS (Communities Organized for Public Service)/Metro Alliance. It was bittersweet because I got to see all the great people I worked with last year and catch up on all the city and state iniciatives that have been taken up by the organization, but I also had to say goodbye to Doug which was hard because I have him to thank for so, so much. Not only did I learn how to rally hundreds of people around issues that were important to them and actually affect change, but I also learned that if people are educated properly about their government, they will try to get what they want from it... and generally succeed. That internship was a blessing for me because it gave me my faith in humanity again. That may sound like a cliché but its true. Doug led me through the steps of becoming an organizer for COPS/Metro and helped me discover that citizens really do hold the power in their cities, rich or poor. Fortunately, he will only be an hour away in Austin, and will be doing a lot of good there with Interfaith and the IAF. Anyway, tonight brought back a lot of good memories of my time as an Intern there and the true passion I had being a community orgnaizer. I honestly do hope I can go back there someday after I graduate and work for COPS/Metro again, but for now college is my main priority...
oh! please see the movie Vodka Lemon. It's very charming, and when else are you going to be able to experience an Armenian love story?
