[NAME:] Larry Butz (goes by the handle Laurice Deauxnim when doing and signing artwork)
[AGE:] 27
[GENDER:] male
[STATUS:] constantly shifting between being single and being involved in a brief mostly-one-sided relationship
[SEXUALITY:] straight
[FRIENDS:]
Phoenix Wright (Nick): A close friend ever since 4th grade, when Larry stuck up for Phoenix during a class trial. Larry enjoys Nick’s company and their friendship is a lasting one, though Phoenix perhaps takes their friendship a little more seriously than Larry does. Still, Larry can get sentimental about friendship, and was very touched when Phoenix said he believed in Larry. Phoenix defended Larry when he was accused of murder, but Larry took the help without thanking him properly (and didn’t pay him). Seeing as how Phoenix is almost always accompanied by various girls and women now, Larry is pretty jealous of him (and assumes they’re all some level of girlfriend).
Miles Edgeworth (Edgey): Also involved in the class trial, Larry considers him a friend, even though they went for 15 years without speaking; enough so that Larry still feels protective of Edgey when Edgey’s in trouble.
Maya Fey: Larry enjoys showering Maya in compliments, and is a bit down that she never responds to them the way other girls do. Plus he’s assuming she’s involved with Nick, and therefore taken.
Pearl Fey: Larry and Pearl became buddies when drowning themselves in their supposed failures together at the shack near Hazakura. In his mind he was working to make Pearl feel better, but everything that came out of his mouth only made the both of them more miserable. This is a common trait for Larry: exaggerating a sad scenario instead of softening it, so it brings people down instead of up. Misery is one of the few things he gets fired up over.
Franziska von Karma (Franzy): Her temper and painful whip really get him charged up; he’s never met a woman quite as intense as her before. He wants to draw portraits of her! Portraits that capture that ferocious feminine fury. He’d like to make a picture book of the portraits called “Franzy’s Whip Lash Splash: Simple & Magnificent”! It’s hard getting her to agree to pose for any portraits, though. But he’s trying.
Bikini: She reminds Larry of his mother.
Iris: He used to have a big crush on Iris, and she was one of the biggest reasons he stayed in Hazakura as long as he did. She’s dating Phoenix now though, and Larry is envious.
Desiree DeLite: Larry returned her husband’s wallet, but really only so he could see her. Her being married didn’t dissuade him from hitting on her (and using his “stale pick-up lines”). The fact that she was very nice to him and made coffee for him was enough to encourage him to continue hitting on her (plus she’s HOT, dude!).
Wendy Oldbag: His superior at his former KB Security job. She always got on his case about his slacking and kept making him buy donuts for her, but her attitude didn’t scathe him too much, and he did respect her, in the way he’d respect a bossy grandmother.
Misty Fey (Elise Deauxnim): His trusted mentor, now deceased. He misses the times they shared, and honors her by carrying on her false last name when he does his artwork.
Mia Fey: He met Mia during his trial when she was mentoring Nick. He appreciated her help a lot more than he appreciated Nick’s, and gave her one of his thinker clocks in gratitude.
random hot-girlfriend-of-the-week: However brief they are, they make him happy for a little while (until they leave the country). He willingly becomes doormats to these women.
[ENEMIES:]
Frank Sahwit: He killed Cindy and tried to pin the murder on Larry. Harsh, man. Cindy might have started dating Larry again eventually, too!
Redd White: Mia was a total babe, and Redd killed her! How dare he deprive the world of one more hot lady.
Manfred von Karma: Not really an enemy right now, other than that Larry feels a little protective of Edgeworth (and that Manfred will probably manage to kill him somehow if he tries anything with his daughter).
[OCCUPATION:] Drifting between dead-end jobs, mostly involving food service. Right now he’s mostly making his living doing portraits, though he doesn’t charge nearly enough for them to make a steady income. Besides, he spends almost all his money on girlfriends.
[HOBBIES:] Art (mostly portraits, and he works in a variety of mediums, such as sculpture, watercolor, colored pencil, paint, etc.). Relaxing. Picking up chicks.
[LIKES:] Hot babes, corny endings, not having to work, dating.
[DISLIKES:] Work, responsibility, Edgeworth’s cold glare, dogs (he used to like them, but the sight of Missile tearing apart his Samurai Dog supply was pretty traumatic).
[STRENGTHS:] His disjointed behavior actually works out in a good way sometimes (like when Manfred von Karma failed to prep him properly in 5 minutes). He has a good heart, and will (eventually) help his friends (and pretty girls) when they need him.
[WEAKNESSES:] Very unlucky. His friends don’t want to deal with him very often since he’s very draining and difficult to deal with. He’s lazy and can’t hold a job for very long, and also can’t hold a relationship for long (and he gets far too attached when he does get involved). He’s not as popular with the ladies as he thinks he is. He’s pretty dense and it takes a lot of specifics for people to get him to understand something. He stutters badly when he’s nervous. People always suspect him when there’s trouble thanks to the motto “When something smells, it’s usually the Butz” (not that it isn’t usually him that caused it anyways).
[APPEARANCE:] Usually sports an orange jacket over a t-shirt. He keeps a trim goatee and gels his hair. When doing artwork, he puts on a cap and a paint-stained pink sweater.
[PERSONALITY:] Lazy, irresponsible, immature, overdramatic, theatrical, amorous, unlucky, unmotivated, pathetic, easily miserable, troublesome, liar, difficult, emotional, easily moved to tears, defensive, tends to run his mouth in the wrong direction, hopeless, freeloader, goofy, stupid, spastic, easily impressed, unpredictable, idealistic. Completely trusts women if they’re cute. Often equates people’s experiences with his own pathetic or trivial ones. Continually seeks approval. He is pretty good at motivating everyone but himself (his flair for the dramatics gets people excited, and his tendency to exaggerate gets them concerned). He cares about his friends (he’s a bit of a sap when it comes to things like friendship), but if they need him, he doesn’t become helpful until the very last minute. His heart’s in the right place, at least; even if his brain isn’t. He usually does the right thing in the end (emphasis on “end”). He is inappropriately dramatic, and kept telling people Phoenix was going to die when all Phoenix had was bruises and a cold, thus getting Edgeworth and Iris unnecessarily worried for a time. He gets severely melodramatic and talks about death when his girlfriend leaves him (which is often; most girls he gets involved with tend to leave the state or country. He tried chasing one to Tibet, but that didn’t work out.). When he does do something good, he’s convinced that people owe him, even though when people do things for him he skips out of doing anything in return for them. Tends to hide information if it could embarrass him somehow.
[BACKGROUND:] Back in the spring of 4th grade, Larry snuck into school even though he had initially stayed home, and stole a fellow student (Miles Edgeworth)’s lunch money for the month, $38. It was during PE, and because Phoenix Wright was the only student who skipped PE (due to a cold), almost the whole class, and even the teacher, completely assume that Phoenix did it, and forced him to apologize to Miles. Miles refused to allow Phoenix to apologize, declaring that without proof there can be no verdict. Surprised and impressed by Miles’ act, Larry also stuck up for Phoenix, criticizing the class for ganging up on him. The three became best friends. Edgeworth moved away at the end of the year for reasons Larry was unaware of, but Larry never forgot him, and continued being friends with Phoenix. Larry continued his education as far as Junior High (which he brags about occasionally) before dropping out. About 15 years after the class trial, Larry was falsely accused of murdering his ex girlfriend Cindy Stone. Phoenix successfully defended him. Months later, Larry got see Edgeworth again, during Edgeworth’s own trial. Feeling brave and protective of his once-close friend, Larry jumped in beyond the last minute and threw in a sloppy witness testimony that saved Edgeworth from an early guilty verdict. Larry is immensely proud of this and feels he deserves to be treated like a hero. He was basically floating on air about the whole act long after it was done. After the trial ended, he paid Edgeworth back the $38 he stole 15 years ago, as a corny gesture of their renewed friendship.
He lost his job as a Samurai Dogs salesman once his boss found out that Missile had eaten all of them (and that he had been slacking off). Later he got a job at a cheese stand, but was similarly fired not long after. Eventually he scored a job as a security guard; the most respectable job he has ever had. But he was laid off in the pandemonium following Kane’s death, with marks against him for his severe irresponsibility besides.
One day he read a book by the infamous Elise Deauxnim, and was so moved by it that he became her pupil. Determined to start his life over and become less of a loser, he joined her at Hazakura Temple until her death, doing artwork under the name Laurice Deauxnim. He said he swore off women due to the constant pain of all the rejections, but he really hasn’t changed a bit, and had a puppyish crush on Iris. He’s very jealous of Phoenix’s current steady relationship with Iris. Currently he’s still doing artwork and living back at his apartment, and now only insists on being called Laurice Deauxnim as a pseudonym for his artistic side, partly as a means of honoring his deceased mentor.
[ETC] I intend to, in addition to typical entries, make his journal a sketch blog.
