218: A lie your parents told you

A lie my mother told me....?

Parents tell lies to their children to protect them from the harsh realities of the world-- or to try to, at any rate. (Whether that succeeds is irrelevant.) You know, things along the lines of No, Grandpa's not going to die. Or, when Grandpa does kick it, things like Well, Grandpa's just sleeping, and we'll see him again someday.

Parents tell lies to make a child stop crying-- yes, of course I'm coming back. Or to make him feel safe-- No, Mommy and Daddy aren't fighting, everything's fine-- or talented-- Oh, sweetie, you made this for me?Well isn't it beautiful-- or loved-- Honey, I'll love you just the same if you get straight A's or not-- or worthwhile-- It doesn't matter what the other kids say about you-- or special-- You never got to meet him, but your father was a good man, a great man.

My mother never lied to me.

She never felt the need.
