the aughts are coming to a close and after reading pitchfork's top twenty albums i feel i should make my own. music has increasingly become an important thing in my life...i may not be able to make it like i would like to (being untrained and talentless) but i do listen to a ton of different things and feel my opinion is relevant at least to myself. these are albums that had a transformative (spell check says that's not a word but i don't believe it) effect on me and shaped my views as to what music is and why its important. most of these selections are going to be painfully obvious to those who know me but i've been drinking and therefore i am full of opinions!
1. animal collective - feels
2. the flaming lips - yoshimi basttles the pink robots
3. lcd soundsystem- sound of silver
4. yeah yeah yeahs - fever to tell
5. wilco - yankee hotel foxtrot
6. white stripes - elephant
7. busdriver - fear of a black tangent
8. elvis costello - when i was cruel
9. of montreal - hissing fauna are you the destroyer?
10. atmosphere - god loves ugly
11. clap your hands say yeah - s/t
12. elliott smith - from a basement on a hill
13. mars volta - de-loused in the comatorium
14. daft punk - discovery
15, blackalicious - the craft
16. tom waits - orphans (yeas, i'm counting three albums as one)
17. modest mouse - the moon and antarctica
18. the avalanches - since i left you
19. m.i.a. - kala
20. andrew bird - the mysterious production of eggs
as far as i'm concerned this is a pretty safe and mainstream list. but it rings true. obviously if i were to go to a hundred more obscure and crazy bands would make it onto the list but i'm fine with this.
i recently conversed with someone who tried to tell me that music these days is horrible and i just cannot understand this argument. music is horrible if you aren't actively seeking it. but that's your fault. if anything there is an overabundance of really great stuff right now...i can't even keep up with it all. but at least i'm trying.
if anyone wants a copy of any of these albums drop me a line.
peace.
