Totally forgot to post picks, though I don't think anyone was really concerned about it. I came out even for the first half of the day's racing, then got a little too brave at the end of the day and took bets out on long shots I liked. All part of the learning process. Pioneer of the Nile was a definite upset to me; the jockey could have ridden better, but Pi was just too tired. I think he ran well in the slop last week b/c it was a bit more like the synthetic tracks he's used to running on; the Preakness dirt was just too hard on him. I wish the Triple Crown tracks would go synthetic-- it would help even the odds for west coast horses.
But on another note, can you believe that filly?! She was huge and FAST. Its really too bad the previous owners didn't put her in the Kentucky Derby-- I think we would have had a Triple Crown winner for the first time in over 25 years. She was also the first horse to win from the 13th position I believe and the first filly to win the Preakness in over 80 years.
Mine That Bird proved he has talent and the Derby wasn't a fluke. That horse has a lot of heart and I am a fan of Mike Smith, the jockey put on Mine That Bird after Borel switched to ride the winner Rachel Alexandra. I also love Calvin Borel-- he was very generous to brief Smith on Mine That Bird. They had a camera shot close up of Bird's face before the derby and I loved his look-- calm, gentle, but determined. At least that's what I thought...
So anyways, now looking forward to the Belmont. I would love to see both horses perform well again.
Besides race day, I have been pretty miserable. I tried lifting our mattress Friday night on my own and ripped up my lower back. I haven't been able to sit for the past 3 days. Not to mention the migraine I had yesterday. Ah poor me! Just kidding...Brian got home and that made everything just fine in my book!
Hoping to post something of real interest in the next few days...oh yeah, and for those of you keeping count, today I am two months smoke free!
