It could be that Rock had an appointment. It could be that he was meeting friends. It could be that he'd slipped a cog and needed to go to the nearest AutoZone to have it unslipped. Knuckles didn't want to assume anything at this point. But his suspicion was that Rock was doing the same thing he was.... looking for answers to these killings. It seemed like Rock was that sort of guy. A Hero.
After a block or two Knuckles decided to stop being a creeper make his presence known. Even if Rock DID have somewhere to be, it would be better if he walked with someone. Even though he was a Robot, he looked pretty much like a young human male and that seemed to be this predator's preferred prey.
He dropped from a nearby ledge, landing on the sidewalk a little bit down from where Rock was walking.
"Yo - You're out kinda late, buddy."

He smirked a little. "You're on patrol too, huh?"

He had to admit, he was impressed. Sure, it was a slightly naive plan - no arguments from Knuckles on that one - but at least it WAS a plan. All Knuckles was doing was lurking around like some kind of gargoyle hoping to spot something out of the ordinary. And willingly using himself as bait was pretty brave.

The fact was, this murderer was callous enough to beings that were flesh and blood. How would he treat someone like Rock who wasn't? Would he find it within himself to be even crueler? Or would the android just not interest him as a victim? It was one a big fat pile of Unknown.
"....well. I guess I shouldn't worry, right? You know your capabilities."

And silver did notice that a boy was walking all by himself in the streets. If he knew any better, he wouldn't have asked this question: "Isn't it a little too late for you to be out in the streets?"
