September 4th... Volgin's birthdate and death date. It was a remorseful time for Raikov, especially now after being able to enjoy his lover being temporarily alive. But Volgin wouldn't want him to be sad, right...? He wanted his Vanya to remain strong - and Raikov would try his damned hardest to do so, to make Volgin proud.
So, the idea came to him... to buy a mulberry plant. One of the local fruit sellers had a particular plant that jumped out at him. A Mulberry bush. That was perfect...! He asked if he could have a clipping of the tree and bought a nice medium sized pot for it, and rushed back to his apartment.
Very carefully, Raikov carried it over to the window and placed it on the sill, while making sure it was in a secure enough spot. He didn't want it to tip over and fall. Sure, it was a plant.. but it had a much deeper meaning to the Russian.
He smiled down at the mulberry plant and whispered to it:
"S dniom roždenija, Yevgeny..."
