Someone arrived.

A small, almost nonfunctional tail flicked behind the visitor, cautiously approaching this man as she examined his current activity. Compared to the standard expectation for what was human, she was slightly alien in appearance: Her body was thin, her skin was pale with an almost purple blush to it and her hair had all the suggestions of a shimmering, deep lavender. Some pointed compromise between human and animal ears poked out of that soft, fluffy hair. Her eyes were full, an even deeper purple.

She had socks on her hands. Her clothes were mismatched with no sense of style in sight, topped off with a sweater tied across her shoulders like a puffy cape.

And she was tilting her head.

Hawke was, by a general rule, rather cognizant of his surroundings, so even though he was engrossed in his (very exciting) game of solitare, it didn't take him long to realize he was not alone.

He was used to strange appearances in this academy, but this girl took him a bit by surprise, mostly because he'd never seen her before. The way she stared at him was frankly, unsettling, and he cocked an eyebrow in her direction, waiting several long moments to see if she would speak.

When it became clear she wasn't going to do that, however, Hawke ventured a greeting of his own. "...Hello."

This new girl nodded quickly without a word. Her human form dulled her psychic abilities consideringly, almost too much for her comforts, but she was determined to see things on the other side for her own experiences. Her team mates were frequently human, and at times, the venture... piqued her curiousity.

(Still, humans were forever too clumsy. With the exception of Marie, she could empathize with her larger companions. Sonny and Kojiro in particular.)

Following a social pattern more suiting of Espeons than humans, she might have slipped too close to Hawke give his game of Chess an even closer look. She made motions to reach for a piece to pick up and examine.

Well, whoever this girl was, she was certainly curious. Hawke studied her for a moment as she studied the pieces scattered across the table, wondering exactly why she was choosing to remain silent. She wasn't human, that much was obvious, and if she didn't want to talk, that was fine by him--the CO wasn't terribly talkative either, and often found conversation to be uncomfortable and strained.

She seemed extremely interested in what he was doing, however, and one couldn't very well play chess by oneself. He handed her a bishop to look at and moved the board to a more accessible location for the both of them. "Would you like to play?"

She looked at the socks on her hands and slid them off, wiggling her thin fingers in the open air. With that, she gently took the bishop, examining the piece. Her fingers explored its shape, its material, its smell. She almost licked it, but caught herself; humans were not supposed to taste things as readily as pokemon might have.

Holding the piece like a gift against her chest, she nodded quickly again, her expression trickling into an awkward excitement. She was not a terribly expressive creature, but she was hesitantly eager. This was new and quite interesting! And a thrill: She could not predict and was flying blind. Oh, yet this was so strangely invigorating, to pad so far from her comfort zone. Why was this?

She followed this human, still clutching the bishop with two hands.

Her fascination with the bishop was all at once strange and slightly endearing, and he watched her out of the corner of his eye as he righted the pieces, putting them in their proper places on the chess board.

It occurred to him that he wasn't entirely sure this mystery girl knew the rules of chess, in which case he'd have to instruct her. That in itself wasn't a bad thing, but Hawke was so used to playing with Lash (who very much knew what she was doing), that he wasn't sure what it would be like to teach someone the ins and outs.

He lined up the pawns neatly. "Black or white? Which side would you like?"

Euphrosyne glanced at her chess piece, then the board, before placing it carefully where she surmised where the other bishops went (if the gap in the arrangement made it clear enough). Considering the two colors, she eventually gravitated towards the white side of the board, carefully taking a seat and trying to smile, like Red smiled. She had some work to do there, but she was practicing.

He almost smiled a little himself when he saw her pick the white pieces. Hawke himself always chose black--he was from Black Hole, after all. She was a strange girl, but not...necessarily unwelcome company.

"Do you know the rules?"

A shake of her head. No. Euphrosyne was not a stranger to the concept of humans playing... board games, but this was a new game. Excitement touched her pale features; maybe she could show her teammates after this! They loved games, as, in her experiences, many pokemon did (although they were not usually human games).

So they were starting from scratch, then. "That's fine." He said, his tone of voice making it clear that he didn't mind explaining the ins and outs of the game to her.

And explain the ins and outs he did--what each piece was and how they were allowed to move, how you could capture your opponent's pieces, what "check" and "mate" was, how to win. A great deal of information, yes, but he was certain that this girl would be able to follow along.

Finally, when he was finished, he pushed the board a little more in her direction. "White moves first."
