Who: Brock. Students. Faculty. Whoever.
What: Brock teaches a bunch of Pokemon about Pokemon breeding and then he finds out they are Pokemon. Supreme humiliation ensues.
When: Monday, February 22nd.
Where: A classroom!
Rating: T for Trainwreck.
[The classroom looks as it normally does, save for the fact that Brock stands by the desk, looking very excited and also maybe a little nervous, mostly because this is something he's never actually done before. It is no stretch to say that he is a bit of a nerd, and talking about his research and studies is one of his secret favorite things to do. Or not-so-secret favorite things to do. So he's up at the front of the classroom, chalk in hand, trying to look all official. This is his big important lecture! He must impart his invaluable knowledge upon the youth of this esteemed academy!
At 8:00, he surveys the room and gets ready to start, but leaves the door open in case anyone is running late.]
So...first off, thanks everyone for coming. I've met some of you already, but I guess I should start with a little bit about myself, huh?
Uh...I'm Brock. Some of you might already know that. I run one of the gyms in the Kanto region, and...admittedly just came to see why so many other gym leaders had taken up jobs here. In light of the research I do back home in Pewter City, and with all the Pokemon trainers enrolled, the headmaster suggested I give a little talk.
[He starts passing out index cards. Because no SBG class is complete without index cards.]
If everyone just wants to write their name and grade level on the card. Maybe a little about yourself, just so I can get an idea of where everyone stands, or what they already know.
[With that, it's back to the chalkboard, all official-like. Is it prepared speech time? It's prepared speech time. He starts to write!]
Anyway, what I do, and what I'm going to talk about tonight is some of the research that's going on. Pokemon breeding is...a broad field that we haven't even begun to scratch the surface of.
It's not exactly what the name implies, really. Well...okay, it is, but there's more to it than the daycares I'm sure at least some of you have heard of. Understanding your Pokemon's needs and how to best meet them is invaluable information for any trainer, and the more we know, the better.
We still ask a lot of "whys", though. Things like why certain species of Pokemon can breed despite uh...major differences, why inter-species breeding doesn't create hybrids, or why certain moves are passed down to offspring and why we've never...actually...seen...how the eggs even...happen.
It's a little daunting, I'll admit, but the basics of Pokemon breeding are pretty straightforward. Understanding them can create huge opportunity for building better teams, teaching Pokemon moves they wouldn't ordinarily learn, or even just the creating the advantage and rewards of raising your Pokemon from day one.
[Yeah. he's drawing now.]
There are a few known ways to breed Pokemon. The first of which is obviously intra-species breeding. That's the easiest to understand. Two Pokemon of the same species will produce an offspring of the lowest evolutionary level.
The same goes for Pokemon of the same evolutionary line.
If the Pokemon are of different species, the offspring will be the same species as the mother, but inherit moves from the father. We call this egg group breeding.
So far, there are thirteen known egg groups, not including Pokemon we've found to be unable to reproduce. If Pokemon are of different species but belong to the same egg group, they can still breed. Some Pokemon belong to more than one egg group, obviously complicating things a little bit more.
[He sets down the chalk, looking very pleased.]
Believe me when I say those are the bare essentials. Of course, I could talk go on and on about all the technicalities, but I think this is a good place to stop for questions. Floor's open.
