War did leave a lot of ugliness behind, didn't it? The scarred, pockmarked ground outside the school and the uneven silhouette of the teacher's dorms were more than enough testament to that. As for the inside... that wasn't unscathed either, but Lucas refused to let himself bow down after he'd made it through that war. Don't think about Giygas -- think about the miracle that destroyed it. Don't think about the Aparoids you killed -- think about the people you helped. Don't think about what was wrecked -- think about what was being rebuilt.

Don't think about what could have been -- think about how wonderful life was now.

And it was wonderful! He was already flustered and blushing and it felt like it was that summer all over again, and... that tree was still standing. Churned-up dirt and rubble all around them, and the tree was unscathed. Lucas couldn't help but grin.

And his smile only grew when he spotted another familiar figure making for that same tree. "Jeff!" Lucas called, waving enthusiastically.

Well, almost unscathed. That looked like it might have been an insect head stuck in the branches up there. Not exactly romantic, but Jeff didn't mind right now. He stepped over a mound of dirt and waved back.

"Hey! Oh man, I can't even-- you have no idea how happy I am to see you right now. Really. I just can't get over everything that happened and--" Oops. He was already starting to ramble and veer off-topic. He pushed his glasses up, laughing. "I mean, um, hi!"

Lucas laughed. He couldn't help it. After a month of anxiety, it was amazing how light everything could seem, and Jeff's adorably eager greeting was just... well, Lucas wasn't sure he could be smiling any more than he was right then ( ... )

Jeff's smile faltered at the mention of the nightmares, but only for a fraction of a second. He moved forward into Lucas' welcoming arms, settling himself down on the other boy's lap. He hoped he wasn't too heavy or anything. "Yeah, I remember that... I can't believe it was almost a year ago already."

His gaze drifted over the field, finding it surprisingly easy to dig up the memories of that warm summer day. "You brought a sunflower, and we were supposed to work on math homework but... We got pretty distracted, huh? That was when I started to make that stupid jetpack-camera... I can't believe the trouble I had with that." What else? Besides that bet, of course. There was no way either of them could forget that, considering it resulted in the night of the fireworks. Jeff blushed a little just thinking about it.

"--Oh, I fell asleep on you too, didn't I? Heh... s-sorry."

"It's fine, Jeff. I... it kind of made me happy, to be honest." It had been a nice day out anyways, and Jeff had really needed the sleep -- that was how Lucas had rationalized it at the time. "I mean... it was just sitting there and doing nothing, really, but I didn't mind staying like that." And there had maybe been something more to it than nice weather and a quick nap, hadn't there? It had taken the night of the fireworks to clue Lucas in, but those feelings had been around for longer than that.

Lucas had never really thought about it before, but they really did owe a lot to that homework session under the tree.

"It's amazing how much has happened since then, huh...?" He settled his hands against Jeff's stomach and studied the foliage above them for a moment. Was that an Aparoid head...? "So... where do we go from here?"
