The State of Livejournal, Your Opinions and what YOU'D like to do

EDIT: PLEASE GO READ THIS IN REGARDS TO SUBJECT LINES.

Starting on December 22nd 1:00AM EST, Livejournal's New Site-Scheme (Update 88) was put online. The public outlash so far has been pretty vocal on their page (you can go read it here). A few hours ago LJ put up a new post regarding the update and what they are doing to fix it. However, we'd ( Read more... )

Eh.... considering I have almost a years paid on Sonny and Knuckles plus extra icons and a years icon packs on Jon it would be a pretty big waste of money on my part to just move. And I think there are some workarounds we could use maybe? And there's always the chance they'll change back.

I dunno. I understand people are frustrated - I am too, beleive me - but I know I'm not the only one who has spent TENS OF TENS of dollars on shiny paid accounts.

I thought of a work around for the subject line thing in terms of topic threads. How about the thread's first comment just serving as the subject and every reply to it would be the actual contents. If HTML works, we can bold it and make it whatever size we want!

There is already a massive problem with that. With thread collapsing, you'd have to do a lot of tab opening or expanding- something most users can't do- as opposed to just seeing what you want to hear about straight in the subject line with no worries about collapsing. A lot of large communities need the subject line for this matter.

It doesn't mean a workaround isn't impossible, but this isn't a very good way to go about it. It doesn't satisfy the needs of all users. As much as I hate to address Anon Comm of all places, their workaround is much more efficient.

Unless thread starters now collapse too, that is a problem with subthreads.

For the big everybody logs, I suppose the userme starting the subthread should hint enough who the thread is about.

There's more than just RPers who use subject lines, though, which is the main point. There are memes, large comm events, and other things outside of LJ RP. Ones with probably about 100 thread starters per page and many more comments beneath them. Those are hard to navigate without subject lines.

I tried. 8I

LJ probably doesn't look at these kinds of journal uses. Nobody uses subject lines in casual blogging and their focus is arrogantly on OTND communities and blogs that puppy photos and recipe flaunting. Those don't generally have a use for subject lines so LJ probably thought it was wasted code. Roleplay, memes, and kink dumps do make up a large part of LJ from our perspective, but we have nothing to share with the general user base that isn't sullying their image.

We can give them all our money, but reputation wise, we mean nothing to them.

I've paid them hundreds of dollars over the years.

3 years on my Japan account ($75), 3 years on my after-Japan account ($75), 4 years for Max (3 with extra icons) ($130), 3 years for Bowser (3 with extra icons) ($105).

I've given them at least $385. I've also gifted people with paid time in the past for their accounts. I have no idea how much. I also had a paid account for my first LJ but I have no idea how long I had that for, at least a year. So, my best guess is somewhere around $450 has been given to LJ in my name.

And, to be frank, I don't relish giving them any more of my money ever again.

I haven't spent quite that much - I've never gotten paid time for my personal journal, so, three years for Knuckles, one for Superman, one for Sonny, extra icon packages on most of those too though as well as additional icon spots for 'un-paid' accounts. Maybe $250 on myself and an additional $100 or so on gifts for folks. That's just an estimate though.

My main problem is that most of the stuff I have now isn't going to expire for a long time - I want to get my money's worth out of it and I'm sure other folks have similar concerns. I suppose I could always play these characters elsewhere on LJ if I was really that passionate about it should we wind up moving. But that seems a little silly being THIS is the game I got those subs/extra doohickeys for.
