Musical Journey

I've recently embarked on a truly daunting journey. I've decided to go through all 4000 of my vinyl records and rip every last song worth anything onto my computer. Granted, any of it that I can find to download from the internet, I'll do that first. But so far it seems to be about 50% that is actually realistic to find. A lot of this stuff never even existed in a digital format and never will, and no one will care enough about it to rip it. But then, at the same time, I'm filling in a lot of blanks: stuff I once owned but for some reason don't anymore, or albums I never had but should have had, I'm downloading those as I go along.

I've been working on this for maybe about a month. I'll have to admit, I'm getting addicted to it. Like during the day, when I need to be working on other things, I get these pangs to come in here to the living room and go through more records. I'm hearing songs I never have before. For instance, I have records I own just because the album covers are so goofy and campy, and I love them. Then the only reason to own, say, the Bee Gees Children of the World is that it has the full version of "You Should Be Dancing" on it. But there's a couple other tracks on it worth keeping that I never bothered to listen to. So I've been at it for a month, and at this moment I'm only up to Cassius.

It may literally take me years to finish this. But I'm convinced that when I'm done, I will have the most incredible collection of music ever assembled on one laptop computer.

It occurred to me, though, that it's kind of a shame I'm not friends with Waleed anymore. Don't get me wrong, that friendship was toxic. He was using me in the most deplorable way, acting like my friend while he was sucking me dry. But the fact remains that he's the only person I can think of who had a record collection as extensive as mine. If I were still friends with him, and could work out a deal to rip his records along with mine, it would make a record station foam at the mouth in lust and envy.

Next in line is Heidi, and she does have a TON of records. I'm going to propose it to her. But her stuff tends to be very jazzy which is not my style at all. It often does have a Latin sensibility which can be hot, but I like stuff that's a bit more edgy than hers. Don't misunderstand, I respect her musical taste implicitly, but it's just a different style from mine.

Love
Ryan
