Now such a foreign concept.. this LJ thing. Crazy that I haven't posted for about a year. Anyhow, thought I'd let people know I'm still alive. I'm suffering through senior design at present (trying to build an ultrasonic homing system so a little robot can navigate to a beacon sending 40 kHz pulses... wowee), and plan to graduate in December with my BS in biological engineering. After I got back from interning in DC last spring, I traveled to Kachemak Bay State Park, Alaska, where I volunteered with Ben for the summer. We were ranger station attendants and I had a fantastic time climbing mountains, watching wildlife, performing maintenance (I learned how to use a chainsaw and build stuff), and cleaning outhouses (possibly the most valuable skill). Ben and I broke up at the end of the summer, and I flew nonstop from 65 degree highs in Anchorage to Atlanta, and then to the blazing inferno of Mississippi summer and drum camp. Fall semester was fraught with all sorts of miseries like Hurricane Katrina, the death of my computer (had to be sent to Dell for repair), and finally the crash of my car into a school bus (had to be sent to the shop for two months). The last one was probably the scariest... fell asleep at the wheel at 3:00 pm. Keeping myself too busy, apparently, but I lucked out and hit the tire of the bus and wasn't hurt, nor were any of the kids on the bus. Although I did manage to break a tire rod so the bus had to be towed. Quite an accomplishment...
Spring semester has been better, although senior design lately has been the despair of my existence. My partner and I now have hopes of finishing by the deadline, though, which is great. I have also managed to travel like a fiend this semester and went to DC for a conference 2 weeks ago, went to New Orleans for Mardi Gras and New Years (absolute delights now that I'm finally 21), went to Florida to get my SCUBA certification, went to Monterey, CA, to check out my internship site for the summer, and am presently in Boston for another conference type deal. The only reason I'm on LJ is that I'm stuck at the hotel due to a mild stomach flu. My 3 fellow travelers visited NY today, but I went to a conference at Tufts on Aquatic and Marine Conservation and Medicine instead, and got back earlier than they did. Not so keen on going out on the town alone, however...
Anyhow, since I won't post for another year, here are the current plans. This summer I'll be interning for NOAA at the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary in California, and it's absolutely gorgeous. It should be a blast, although I don't know anyone, nor will I have a car, so I imagine I'll have a relaxing time watching seals on the beach and riding a bike around town. After graduating in December, I'm looking for an internship either in marine mammal medicine, wildlife medicine, or feline medicine, so we'll see how that goes. I might try to do two internships, but I will enroll in vet school Fall 2007.
I think that's about it... Time for rest. Tomorrow will be day 3 of my stomach virus, so hopefully I'll be completely better. Made it to solid food today, but not by much. Hope everyone is doing well.
