Interesting work today… In the morning we did a C-Section on a dog that had been in labor since last night… The owners didn’t want to bring her in. They brought her this morning and Dr. P operated and when he opened her up she had a puppy inside and he brought it out, but it was already dead. We tried to resuscitate it… but it was gone. Sad. There was also a poodle brought in last night that had a broken back high up and could not move… but the owners wanted to give it a couple days so we are just trying to keep it out of pain… Then there was a dog that got run over by a car and so had an enormously herniated belly, but Dr. P fixed that… But back to my C-Sections…
This afternoon there was another one… but it is more like an abortion I suppose. The Mom was an older dog with congestive heart failure and we were going to spay the dog because the puppies would become toxic if the mom tried to carry them to term. Dr. P opened up the dog and the uterus was huge. He took it all out and put it in a tray… I had asked if the puppies were still alive, and earlier he had said they probably had a heart beat… he seemed to have forgotten, so when I asked again… another tech asked if we should put the puppies down… so she got some injectable something or other and I cut open each of the pockets with the puppies open and the other tech put them all down. They were well defined… could even tell the fingernails… and then I did further autopsy on them… just for curiosity’s sake. Interesting emotions… Sometimes it’s a sad job… And yet you look at everything else we get to do in the practice… I asked Dr. P and he said normally they will only spay before 30 days, unless it’s a harm to the mother. That’s good. It really is a good job… but sometimes some of the stuff is a little troublesome. Getting to see all aspects of veterinary medicine, though, that’s for sure…
