Adriana Varejao's art is beautiful and disturbing, which I think qualifies it as just about as spooky as anything can be. I remember, very distinctly, the feeling that this piece evokes. It was on display at the SFMOMA, I think in 2000. I stood, willing myself to step away for several minutes. I caught my hand as it snaked forward, wanting to touch the bloody mess hiding just beneath the surface. There is something so very frightening in facing the truth that lies beneath beauty. The photos do not do it justice, but I think you get the idea. Enjoy!
