World music

I uploaded these for another LJ friend who was kind enough to share her own world music collection with me, and I figured I'd put them up here too in case anyone else wants to take advantage. Most of these are from sunny places and make great summer listening. I'm bad at picking favorites, so there are a bunch. There are individual links and a zip file at the end with them all. This was a fun project for a sunny Sunday!

Europe:

Mal ô Mains - Sanseverino (France)
Gypsy jazz? I'm not sure what style this is, but it's fun.

La Fée Clochette - Polo (France)
"I'm looking for Tinkerbell, the fairy of the nightclubs, the one that lets me in for free / I'm looking for the ghost fairy, the fairy of the parties, the fairy of the bars, the one that always gets me home too late."

Shiva's Daughters - Arling & Cameron (the Netherlands)
Missione a Bombay - Nicola Conte (Italy)
Two of my favorite songs from the fabulous "World Lounge" CD.

Dance Mediterranea - Simon Shaheen & Qantara (Palastine)
This almost starts out sounding classical; amazing violin work.

Hawaii/South Pacific:

Ku'u Lei Awapuhi - Hapa (Hawaii)
Hapa is Hawaiian for "half"-one member is from Maui, the other from New Jersey. "Where are you, my beloved? You, who are like the ginger, covered in the misty rain. If only we could be together again. Here, to love's sweet embrace, I call thee. Oh my beloved (I am here!), where are you? (Here, indeed am I.) It is you who I will forever turn to."

E Iti Taurua - Bobby & Angelo (Tahiti)
It's surprising how similar Polynesian music is, with how far apart the islands are.

Siasi - O-shen (Papua New Guinea)
O-shen is the son of missionaries; he still identifies strongly with the PNG culture and now lives in Hawaii. This song is too fun.

Everywhere else...

Pays Sol - Nana Matias (Cape Verde)
This feels very exotic; I imagine sitting in a bar near the water, watching locals dance.

Macoklis Mango - Un Solo Pueblo (Venezuela)
A calypso Carnival song. Because I can't resist anything with mangoes.

Mbo Harita Avao - D'Gary & Jihé (Madagascar)
This is off my first world music CD, "Islands." It feels very light and summery. I wish I could sing along.

Soltarlo - Claudia Gomez (Colombia)
This one is all a cappella.

Esa Noche - Café Tacuba (Mexico)
A pretty, slow song; I wish I knew how to dance to it.

Procura - Chichi Paralta (Dominican Republic)
A blend of just about every Caribbean style there is.

Nuestros Lazos - Ramón Cordero (Dominican Republic)
This one is traditional bachata. I love the guitar.

Mayi a Gaye - Boukman Eksperyans (Haiti)
A Haitian lullaby from the 18th century, poignant in view of the country's troubles today. "We gave corn to the spirit as an offering. Wangol, you left, when shall I see you again? Wangol, you left, the country has changed. The country has fallen, the country is in shambles. We gave corn to the spirits as an offering, and the children are possessed by spirits. Each day when we rise, the situation gets worse. We must bring food in the house. It's for the spirits to bless us, amen!"

Chunari Chunari - Abhijeet & Anuradha Shiram (India)
Mendhi/Madhorama Pencha - Madan Bala Sindhu (India)
From the movie Monsoon Wedding. The first is Indian pop--I love to dance to it. The second is where the women paint the bride with henna, one of the best scenes.

Here's a zip file for easier download.
