Okay, so this is a reaction post/vent/rant about the casting of the 11th Doctor.
My initial reaction to the name, Matt Smith, was simply: "Who is this guy?"
It immediately prompted me to scroll through my f-list to find information about the new actor. His is completely new: he is a TV and stage actor, with about 90% of his credits from productions done in the past three years or so. His best standing reputation is the fact that he's played alongside Billie Piper (aka Rose Tyler) thrice.
So obviously, his credits slightly impressed me, but mostly leaves everything open-ended; tabula rosa. His career is going to be defined by his role as the 11th Doctor. That much is certain.
Yet, I find myself impressed despite my neutrality. I feel I cannot fully judge him until we see him perform, because right now every judgment will be based on what we know and what little we've seen of him.
I am impressed by the interview he gave and the personality that I perceived from his interview. His hand gestures ("jazz hands") and mannerisms are extremely Doctor-esque. His excited fast-talk followed by seriousness emphasized by emotion expressed in his hands and face - it's a bit like David Tennant but with a new face and a new mood. His outfit and sense of fashion is extremely different (a little too emo for my taste - if he adopts that for the Doctor I may not like that) but despite my personal dislike of his haircut and clothing, I feel that in the long run, he's a fresh face with fresh opportunities abound.
He has the potential, and the best thing to do now is to wait for him to fulfill it.
Here's a link to the interview(s) I was looking at in case anyone wants specific evidence or has any curiosity:
