creative_muses Dec '07: Resilient

So I know this woman that fell down stairs with all three of her kids in tow. One by the hand, carrying one and pregnant with the third. All of them were fine. Unless you ask the youngest now. She says a fall down the stairs would explain a lot about her older brother and sister.

Anyway. My point is that kids are resilient. Things that would break an adult? Kids can bounce back from. I'm not saying it doesn't hurt, but given the chance they will still act like children.

Most of the kids here could tell you stories that would make you cry like a little girl and need therapy for the rest of your life. And every word would be true. I know, I've been there.

But it doesn't stop them. Just walk into Terminal City and hold still for thirty seconds. It's Christmas here, just like everywhere else. And we've got somewhere between one hundred and fifty and two hundred kids here (Sometimes the younger teens can't make up their mind. Sometimes I'm out there with them acting like a goober.) and we couldn't scrape enough money together for presents. But we did manage to get enough for a two pallets full of Christmas lights. Utterly mismatched, some of them don't even work quite right. I found a guy. He got us a deal.

I call it the Great Freak Nation Traveling Light Show. You stand still for thirty seconds and they will have you draped in lights. It's just as likely that they'll yank the lights off you so fast you'll spin like a top. They're just wandering around here trailing Christmas lights like deranged snails. Some of the little genius monkeys have even rigged up power packs so they don't need a ground current.

That's my point. They've had about as rough a deal as you can get and they still play and laugh. If that isn't resilience you tell me what is.
