I don't know about you guys, but personally I thought this episode was one of the best of the season.
The ethical dilemmas, the blurring of the moral lines, the bringing back of the friendship that started the series... it was really good. It was interesting to see an episode where Clark depended on Lex to save him. And the stakes were higher than they usually are for our hero this time. I thought they did a great job showing Clark struggling with the pain. He really sold his suffering this go-round. It also did a great job showcasing Lex's vices: his bitterness toward Clark, his constant refusal to accept his mistakes and tendency to lay the blame elsewhere. Lex really seemed to have burned all of his bridges now that everyone seems to consent that the world is a better place without him.
I like that Clark has taken the place of the moral beacon on the show. Often it felt like Martha and Chloe were the moral guides for Clark. They were the ones who discouraged him from acting on his anger and bitterness. Now, the tables have turned and Clark is the only one who fights for Lex. This is really how it should be. Clark is, after all, superman. He needs to have the highest moral ground, especially this late in the game. In light of that, its good to see Clark's regret in letting Lex go as a friend, even when Martha tells him to let him go. It's clear to the supporting players now that Lex is beyond help. Only Clark somehow hopes for redemption, thinking more with his heart than his head given recent events.
I also dug that Lana stuff. It was nice to see her play the enraged bride. You really do feel sorry for her, trapped in a loveless marriage and betrayed by the man she thought she loved. I really, really loved the final conversation between Lex and Lana with all the double meanings in her words, especially "I dont know what I did to deserve you." Heee! The Lionel stuff is intriguing. I am very ready to skip forward to the finale and answer all the questions this season. Ah well, only a few more weeks! :)
