Two people injured in collision

SPINDALE -- One man was flown to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and a woman was taken to Rutherford Hospital as a result of a spectacular two-vehicle accident on U.S. 74B in Spindale Tuesday at about 11:30 a.m.

Grover Clinton Deyton, 72, of 1142 First Street, Forest City, was treated at Spartanburg Regional and discharged from the emergency room, a hospital spokesperson said late Tuesday.

Sherry Bailey, 27, of Caroleen, a passenger in Deyton's car, was released from the hospital following treatment.

According to Spindale police, Deyton was driving a Chevrolet Blazer on Callahan-Koone Road and failed to stop at the stop sign before entering U.S. 74B. Upon entering the road, Deyton's car ran under the rear tires of a large truck that was hauling car tires and traveling east toward Forest City.

Upon impact, the truck overturned on its side. The SUV traveled another 199.8 feet up a grassy embankment and across the railroad tracks before coming to rest against a fence only a few feet from the Oh Susannah sewing factory.

Bailey's son Ronnie Bailey, who was not injured, was riding in the back seat of the Blazer.

The truck driver, Frank Wheeler, 45, of Stanley, was not injured.

Officer Lee Edwards of the Spindale Police Department said the investigation into the accident is continuing and charges are pending.

Both vehicles were total losses.

Also assisting at the scene were Spindale firefighters, traffic control and Rutherford County EMS. Traffic was rerouted around the busy stretch of U.S. 74B at the lunch hour.

Deyton and Bailey were transported to Rutherford Hospital via Rutherford County EMS. Deyton was flown from the hospital's helipad to Spartanburg.

All the employees of Oh Susannah were home for Christmas vacation on Tuesday with the exception of owner Don Crawford and management team members Martha Hopper and Jeff Crawford. Jeff Crawford said he heard a loud noise and looked out the window and saw the Blazer as it was crashing toward the building and then ran to call for help.

No one inside the building was injured.
