White nights

These last couple of days I've been walking at night a lot and I slowly realised just how unique and beautiful white nights are.

When you look outside and see new buildings glow in milky natural light with no street-lamps anywhere in sight; when you see scenes looking like, pardon the comparison, HDR photos; when you can catch last rays of the sun running out of subway station coming from the last train way past midnight...

You know, when they are shooting a scene that is supposed to happen in nighttime, but can't actually afford to film at night because of lack of time or whatever, and they use those filters that kinda darken everything but still can tell it's not a real night? Or they do shoot it at night but since it's too dark they use extra lighting, so it's still dark around but somehow you can see all important things clearly?
That's what it looks like.

Light buildings on the backdrop of dark stormy sky look like they are providing the light the light themselves. People are losing track of time and missing trains and bridges...

It's like there are two kinds of day and no night. One day is slightly brighter and usually sun is visible during it. The other one is more twighlighty, darker, surreal and you can't see the source of light. But night? Doesn't happen.

Some time ago, when I almost didn't work during summer, I used to go walking at night, sometimes coming back only with sunrise. Or I would read and surf and write the whole night and go running just when sun rose above the horizon...

When I was a child and was spending first half of the every summer at my aunt's and uncle's country house, I usually spent nights reading. Aunty, bless her soul, only caught me on this few times, but I think she always knew I was doing it every night: it took forever for me to wake up in the mornings.
