Do women in this day and age still have to fight for equal pay?
Yes. While there are many factors that lead to differences in pay, which I will address later, the gender gap exists. There are women in the 21st Century doing the same jobs as their male counterpart and receiving less money. "Generally the finding is that men earn more than women at every educational level but the gap is smaller at higher educational levels" (BLS 2). That means that women, while continuing to close the gender gap the longer they stay in school, will still earn less money than men after, for example, a four-year degree. Moral of the story: stay in school, ladies. Maybe then you'll have a chance to receive the compensation you earn.

The article outlined several reasonable reasons for the gap (see below). Though, I still reject his conclusion that “there is no male female wage gap”. It is fallacious reasoning to conclude that there is no gap at all because in some circumstances the statistics are skewed, making the gender gap appear larger. Institutional discrimination exists against sexes, races and varying cultural practices.
What reason(s) could you offer for this inequality?
Some very reasonable reasons for the gender gap at large:
· The sexes choose different occupations- therefore different pay
· Men often work more hours per week because women typically spend more time doing unpaid work like caring for children or aging parents. The more hours you clock the more you make per hour.
· “Women gravitate toward jobs with fewer risks, more comfortable conditions, regular hours, more personal fulfillment and greater flexibility. Simply put, many women-not all, but enough to have a big impact on the statistics-are willing to trade higher pay for other desirable job characteristics.”
· Men and women typically communicate differently so a man may be more aggressive when negotiating starting pay or raises throughout employment. This would lead to a man being paid more than a woman while performing the same job.
