Tom cares for River a great deal, even though he doesn't see her, well, ever, anymore. :-P She falls into the category of "young women he is sworn to protect". This group consists primarily of Door, Anthy, River, Tonks, and Amy.
Now, he knows full well that none of these young women really need his protection, but he will offer it in case they ever do. So she taps into his newly awakened chivalrous side that borderlines on chauvinism, because hey - born in 1927. It's a thing.
He also respects her as a warrior, but because she is a little off (he's polite about this kind of thing), he thinks she is a little more fragile than a warrior like Faith, but a warrior nonetheless.
He thinks of her often. The trip they made together was one he'll never forget.
Ingress thinks River is neat, but she's also sad, and maybe sick, a lot of the time. When she sees River unhappy, she takes it upon herself to make her feel better, to cheer her up. Of all the "big girls" she talks to, River is the one most like a kid to her.
Funnily enough, I don't think she knows that River is a gunslinger.
Tom thinks Lan is stoic (duh) and aloof. He doesn't mind that, but he does wish he could be one of the fellows that can just sit and talk.
Hey, on that note, Ingress hasn't had a swords master to teach her since Arithon faded away. That's been a long time. Might we arrange something between the two? I fear her forms are getting rusty, and that will not do.
I figure I probably know Ingress's, but I ask anyway.
Also, for old times' sake: Susan Pevensie and Alain.
Also also, Tom and Lan, and really I stop there for your sake. *grin*
