Kafka on the Shore

I just finished reading Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. It's an interesting book...a little misleading, and full of weird, fantasy-element type stuff, but surprisingly realistic.

If I ever write original fiction, I want to write like this...

Anyways, I was daydreaming about a shounen ai relationship between Oshima and Kafka the entire time...*snrk* yeah, my mind can be really predictable when it comes to romance. *Daydreams more*

This was most impressive to me, by the way, because of the characters...they're not perfect, and dang, Murakami makes me snort aloud sometimes-- for example.

"You know, you look good in that necktie."

He lets go of me, looks me in the face, and smiles. "I've been waiting for you to say that." (465)

Just inside the entrance a young man is sitting behind a counter where you check your bags. . .
A long, freshly sharpened pencil between his fingers, the young man gazes intently at my face for a while. The pencil is yellow, with an eraser at the end. The man's face is on the small side, his features regular. Pretty, rather than handsome, might describe him best. He's wearing a button-down white cotton shirt and olive green chinos, with not a wrinkle on either. When he looks down[,] his longish hair falls over his brow, and occasionally he notices this and gingers it back. His sleeves are rolled up to the elbows, revealing slender white wrists. Delicately framed glasses nicely complemented his features. The small plastic name tag pinned to his chest says Oshima. Not exactly the type of librarian I'm used to. (36)

Hoshino found Oshima an appealing young man. Intelligent, well groomed, obviously from a good family. And quite kind. He's got to be gay, right? Not that Hoshino cared. To each his own, was his thinking. Some men talk with stones, and some sleep with other men. Go figure. (377)

Those parts made me grin-- and oh, yes, I did have a very Hyde-like image for Hoshino the entire time, but my perception of Kafka (a strong, tall young 15 year old who can pass for 17 or 18, apparently) kept changing. ^^ that's the thing with 1st person narratives-- you never get a good description of the protagonist unless another, different, 1st person perspective describes them.

Yeah, I think I'll happily make up an ending to Kafka on the Shore that suits my shounen ai tendencies. *Grins*
