Went to Metrocon... talked a little bit about it & posted pix on DOA:
http://www.denofangels.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=26232 It's weird... so many more people are becoming more familiar (obsessed?) with these dolls, so I'm getting a lot more comments like "I love your Dollfie!" rather than "what a cool doll... where did you get it?" I really don't mind the "Dollfie" comments... as I said on DOA, I would prefer that everybody used the correct terms for everything, but I usually don't get bent out of shape when they don't (otherwise I'd never be able to shop in a store that had lanes specifying "10 items or less" ;} ).
Anywho, the thing that's starting to wear on me a little bit is people asking how much I paid for Fox. I'm not terribly private about what (little) money I have or how I spend it, generally speaking, but I'm used to monetary issues being discussed rather naturally as part of an ongoing conversation among friends and/or family. It catches me a little off guard, therefore, when a complete stranger accosts me out of the blue, points at Fox, & asks "how much did that cost?" I'm even more put out when, upon hearing the answer, the questioner reacts as though they think the price is astonishing, and *especially* if they make some sort of remark like "oh, I love those dolls... but not that much. I'd rather have [insert random other thing here]".
I know people are, as a rule, ignorant & rude, & they're not actually *trying* to make me want to beat them to death with my "overpriced" "Dollfie"... but I can't help getting my hackles up by the end of a weekend of such comments.
I also hate back-handed compliments like "Oh, your doll is soooo pretty!" "Thank you!" "Yeah... I've got one like her back home..." So, what...? Are you complimenting me on having taste similar to yours, or thinking you can "break the ice" by complimenting me then impress me by how similar your taste is to mine, or are you just clumsily trying to bond w/ anyone who seems to share an interest with you? Honestly, I'm not very socially "ept", so these really are the things that go through my mind...
Other strange doll-related con moments:
~ My fiance & I were at a bar a block away from the convention center. Fox was sitting on the bar a little to my right (my fiance was on my left). A girl snuck up behind me & fondled Fox's sleeve before I noticed her (about the time that one of the girl's friends chastised her for being creepy). I can understand admiring a doll & asking permission to inspect it closer, & I can understand admiring it from afar because you don't wish to talk to its owner... but touching it when you don't think anyone is looking? WTF? o_O
~ Random con-goer abruptly asked, "That cost $75, right?" I asked, "What?" (I thought she meant the outfit Fox was wearing, which I'm pretty sure cost less than $75, but looks like it could have conceivably cost that much). "The doll... that cost $75, right?" "Uh... no. She cost $660." ::Long pause:: "Oh. I guess that's a different one."
~ Another random con-goer told me how pretty Fox was, & I thanked her. Con-Goer then proceeded to comment on how awesome Episode One was. I nodded & smiled faintly, wondering what brought on that particular non-sequitor. "She *is* from Episode One, right?" o_O "Um... no. No, she's not." Can anyone help, here? Can you remember anything in *any* episode of Star Wars that looked anything like this?
They were also filming footage for Antiques Roadshow at the same convention center as Metrocon this weekend. It was pretty entertaining watching some of the painfully "normal" older people wheeling furniture & paintings through the throngs of cosplayers, wannabe goths, & generally stinky fan-people. ;D Several Antiques people stopped my fiance & I & asked what was going on... one woman who had to have been at least in her mid-late 70's told me that it was a lot of fun watching us, & she wished there'd been stuff like this when she was my age. ^_^ Once again, I have to say that generally speaking, old ladies are the bestest people on the face of the planet.
Of course, there was also one convention center staff member who stopped my fiance & me from ascending an escalator in search of food, telling us that "no kids are allowed on the elevator". You can imagine our confusion, since we don't have any kids & didn't know where the elevator even was. Once we figured out that he meant that he'd been told not to let any anime con people up to the Antiques level, we just went to a different escalator & got our food... surrounded by Antiques people commenting loudly enough for us to hear, "now, look at those characters!"
The "kids" comment still really gets me. I know my fiance & I don't really look as old as we are, but we're both in our 30's & I really *don't* think we look like "kids". Hell, nowadays we can quite often buy booze w/o getting carded. :P
Eh. ::shrugs:: Whatever. ;P
