Home again, busier than ever

You wouldn't think that relaxing and recovering would be so time-consuming, but they are. Karel basically took a whole heaping chunk of vacation time, so he'll be off for another two whole weeks, and fussing about the apartment like a worried hen, and not letting me so much as stay up for more than an hour at a time. I'm enjoying the whole being-spoiled bit, but I gotta confess, it's a bit weird not having to do anything except feed the baby.

Breastfeeding isn't nearly as weird as I've heard it described, though that's probably because Rijntje took to the process like a duck to water. For the most part, we're lucky: he's a relatively easy baby, whose only tantrums are had when we have to change him. He hates being naked and cold, which is understandable, but I still wouldn't want to be in the upstairs apartment at 3 am, when he starts screaming. Happily, the trauma is over in a few minutes, and he quiets down quickly. My mom would be jealous, I think ;-)

The cats have taken to the new baby with a surprising degree of equanimity. The Tweeb likes to huddle on my lap, irrespective of whether the baby is in my arms. Shadow has surrendered the bassinet without much fuss or whining, and has only sniffed him curiously. Noodle couldn't give two shits about the baby, as long as his food keeps arriving on time.

And...the really weird thing about having given birth: it's not the lochia or the weird high from fentanyl or forgetting how much pain you were in thirty seconds after your baby is out, or anything else baby websites mention. It's the fact that you need to remind yourself to pee every so often, because apparently the nerves telling your bladder it's full don't work properly for a little while afterwards.
