'Arthur himself, dressed in a leather corselet appropriate for so great a king, placed on his head a helmet of gold engraved with the figure of a dragon. A circular shield on his shoulders, called Pridwen, on which was painted the image of holy Mary, the Mother of God, kept him always mindful of her. He was girded with the best of swords, Caliburn, which had been made on the isle of Avalon. And a spear called Ron graced his right hand.'
(The History of the Kings of Britain Geoffrey of Monmouth Book 10)
What? A spear called Ron. Given the ornate description of everything else Geoffrey of Monmouth thought that required no explanation. Seriously? This makes all the hours trawling through pages of Arthurian literature worth it :P
