Well, last night my computer started making all these really loud sounds. Dump-truck-loud sounds. Nay, airplane-loud sounds. Non-stop cranking and grinding sounds. Sounds that a little laptop should not be making. So I thought that if I just turned it off, the sounds would stop, the computer would have time to rest, and when I turned it back on, it would be back to its very slow, only slightly loud self. Well, I waited an hour for it to shut down, and it didn't. I even tried closing the top--it still cranked away at me, like an impatient old lady. Micah finally suggested that I remove the battery. I did so. Well, now my dear old computer is quiet. So quiet, in fact, that it will not turn back on. I took it to the computer techie guys this morning. They had a look at it and informed me that my hard drive has indeed crashed. This is sort of a happy thing, because it means that they are going to replace it for free. There are two slightly bad things about this, however. The first being that he cannot access any of the info on the hard drive, which means that I have lost EVERYTHING--this includes 4 years worth of pictures. The second bad thing is that since they are not replacing the body of the computer, it means that I get to hang out with the old beast (sticking space bar, broken speakers--yes, all 18,000 lbs of it) for at least another 2 years. Looks like I won't be needing to buy the Mac of my dreams any time soon!
