Weekend in Vegas

Room 2005 of the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino is not the worse place in the world to wake up at six o'clock on a Sunday morning. I've woken up in worse, at least. My right shoulder ached from sleeping on it oddly most of the night, not in a painful way though and it made an enormously loud pop as I moved it for that first stretch of the morning. I lay in that warm bed on the twentieth floor for a good ten minutes taking stock of the weekend before rolling into the shower, rolling into some clothes and then rolling out grab a cup of coffee.

The past couple of weekends have been kind of a blur, first with Midwest Furfest and then with this excursion to Las Vegas for the wedding of two very good friends. Starting with this week and then chatting more about MWFF in post to follow, I think, is going to be the way that I want to approach this.

My Vegas weekend started off inauspiciously at SJC where I learned that a portion of my flight, from San Diego to Las Vegas, had been canceled due to weather in San Diego. I got notice of the cancelation early enough that I was able to get myself onto a slightly later direct flight that got me in an hour earlier than I'd been planning for. Upon checking into Planet Hollywood I was able to upgrade to a slightly better room than I'd originally reserved. (Note: Room 2005 is adorned with items from the Luke Perry film 8 Seconds.) Shared dinner and wine with friends after checking in and passed out in bed around 2AM Saturday morning.

Woke up again around 8am on Saturday and overpaid for some coffee and muffin, then grabbed a shower and chilled out most of the day until the wedding. Had a hotdog at Pinks, had a glass of olive flavored vodka and then spent time up in my room writing. Vegas is fun but I have zero desire to gamble when I'm here...mostly because I can't stand to be in the canios. Smoking, mostly. Still bugs the shit out of me.

When the evening rolled around I got myself into shape for the wedding which, in this case, meant putting on a pair of slacks, button down and my trusty sport coat. The wedding itself was held in the chapel of Eli Roth's Goretoreum. Not quite my thing (not a tremendous fan of body horror genre) but as weddings in Vegas go, it was worth the price of admission to see my friends married in bloody haunted house by a dwarf. No, really. A dwarf officiated their marriage.

Following that we headed over to Mandalay Bay for the reception dinner at Alain Ducasse's Mix restaurant on the 64th floor of the THEHotel. (Mandalay Bay) Fantastic meal and excellent wine pairing. It was a spectacularly good way to share time with good friends celebrating something genuinely good in their lives.

Following that I made the walk back to Planet Hollywood where I, again, passed out until this morning. Now I'm at the airport waiting for my flight this evening, doing work and, again, writing. Nothing in Vegas really striking me as a must do today. I like coming to Vegas but I also love leaving it when I'm done and this trip I didn't really need a lot of Vegas to be done with it for a little while more.

But, of course, it has to be said that I do hope my friends a long and happy life together.
