Mina was a deep sleeper.

She was fast asleep when he got home, so she didn’t see the hours he spent tossing and turning as he lost a battle with insomnia. She didn’t hear him get up and go to the bathroom, pull out a bottle of pills, and toss two down his throat without hesitation before returning to bed.

She did hear the crash coming from the kitchen that jolted her awake in the wee hours of dawn.

Kevin was puttering around the kitchen in his boxer shorts in the dark; his glasses perched on the island in the middle. Most of the cabinets were open and boxes of cereal lined the counter. He shuffled towards the dishwasher, opened it, and retrieved a dirty bowl, which he placed reverently next to the box of Corn Pops.

“Kevin?” she said hesitantly, wondering if she should ask first about the dirty bowl, or whether or not he could see without his glasses. He ignored her and picked up the box of Corn Pops, opened it, and poured cereal all over the floor.

The cat rushed in and started chowing down.

“What are you doing?”

He still didn’t seem to hear her as he put the empty cereal box into the refrigerator.

“Are you OK?” She rushed over, but he brushed her aside and picked up the milk carton.

“Oh no.” She pulled it out of his hand. “Sorry, baby, but you’re sleepwalking and I need that to put in my coffee tomorrow.”

Undaunted, he went back into the fridge and popped open a can of soda, which he then dumped on the floor on top of the spilled cereal.

Mina sighed. “How many Ambiens did you take?”

“Crustacean,” was his reply.
