I much prefered the old format, where we were given a set of images and could do whatever we liked with them. I find the current format a bit too restrictive and at times confusing.

I have to agree with this, too. The provided-base idea can be quite annoying when the base in question isn't quite what you want. Say, for example, you'd wanted to move the image slightly moreso to the right and downwards -- this would be impossible with a given base, but definitely possible with a given image (ala the 'image' part of the challenge).

Well, you don't have to keep the base as-is. you can crop it any way you want.

Might it be better with two images and a more general theme?

I'm going to AZ tomorrow, but when I come back on the 6th, Chibi and I are going to talk about what we want to do with formatting whenever we're both online.

I understand that you can crop it, but say, for example in my icon, you wanted a bit more of Mako's arm, or the top of her head, y'know? And you couldn't get that, because if you moved the base then you'd have blank space where you needed more of the picture.

I think the two-images &a general theme idea is really good. You'd definitely have to run it by the other members, though.

If you were looking to still keep the theme type thing; sw_eu_stills has a nice format. You get the regular image challenge and you also get a themed challenge (sometimes, but lately they've not done the themed challenges) but they're almost like separate contests.

I think a Moulin Rouge comm I was on did something similar at some point. Chibs and I will def. talk about this when I come back from AZ--thanks for the tip! :)
