For point 3, are you thinking of VCD players? DivX capable DVD players are only about 1 year old (if that) and most certainly are still around.

I could do all that stuff but I'm still not even sure if it would work as my digital TV box has an Scart AV output. Can you get a capture card that has an Scart input?

Besides, all that stuff requires effort. I just want to buy one that's all integrated and shiny. :(

Nope, not VCD players. Divx was once a box you could get, and when you 'rented' a movie, you'd pop the CD (indeed, it was a VCD with damn near DVD quality!) and it would dial a main office and it was kinda a pay per play deal. Needless to say, since you had to buy a seperate box much like todays cable boxes that need a phone line and all that other crap. Aside from that, integrated codexes in hardware are not the norm, and since the divx codec changes periodically, it is really not the best idea to do it other than with a computer

Dude, I feel that way about *lots* of technology these days, and it really just pisses me off.

Did you know that there is no mp3 player that has
- a radio
- at least 256megs of storage, with the ability to expand with removable storage
- customizable playlists
- I'm too tired to play this game well at the moment. Suffice it to say that none of the mp3 players have all the bells and whistles that I craved, so I had to sacrifice. *sob*!

What pisses me off the most is video game consoles. Why should there be 4 different consoles, each of which have their own proprietary games? On princple, I decided to boycot the damn things years ago.

Until I bought a Playstation 2 yesterday...

Four consoles? What? Did they debut something weird in Europe?
Besides, if you really don't wanna pay, each of the big three has it's own proprietary hack/mod so that you can get games on the cheap (or even free).

All told you can pick up all three consoles and mod them for around four hundred... then spend next to nothing on games. I would've done that years ago but my SO has this irritating conscience thing...
