After seven years of perfunctory Christmas cards, Scorpius had stopped expecting anything from his mother. He was understandably surprised-fucking pissed, really-when she suddenly made an appearance on his birthday.
“What are you doing here?”
Astoria lifted an eyebrow. “Can’t a mother wish her son happy birthday?”
“All things considered, I’m surprised you managed to get the date right.”
Her eyes flickered with something like guilt. “Darling, the past is what it is. Can’t we-”
“No.” He barely refrained from shouting. “You’ve made it clear you wanted no part of this family, so stop playing the mother card.”
