In Slytherin, lying was not considered as vice. It's an art of tactical deceit and one must be astute and manipulative, suffice to determine when, to whom, and how much degree to employ falsified information most effectively.
Lies were not only exercised for House's benefit. Rather, cutthroat inner-house competition required the Slytherins to stay keen and resourceful. If one couldn't discern truth from falsehood, it's his own incapability.
Once again-- in Slytherin, at fault was always the duped one.
"Yo, Malfoy! I just saw Potter's shagging Cho!"
"Hell, I knew he's cheating on me! Gotta start POTTER STINKS campaign!!"
