Severus never thought too highly about his feelings. He considered them a weakness; something he could easily overcome given the chance. There was never a time and place for that though. He was too busy pursuing other ventures. Then Lily Evans entered his life and changed the way he saw the world. It wasn't a miraculous overnight occurence, but nevertheless it happened.
Narcissa Black, his only close associate in Slytherin house, noticed and scolded him for talking to a mudblood. She was shocked to hear herself say those words because she had never cared about blood purity. She excused herself while she figured out why she was falling into the belief of her parents when she had sworn not to.
Severus was left there alone to think. He thought about his life, he thought about Lily and most of all he thought about the future he wanted to have. That's when he realized Lily could never fit into his world and there was no point in trying to make a place for her.
