I'm a tough guy!

Story time!

Those of you who know me on FB have already seen this but I'll share anyway. Welcome to the world of Sam, where walking may cause problems. Haha

Wednesday I'm wandering around a neighborhood putting out fliers about a grand opening for a new store we have. Nothing too exciting, I've done this before. I was wearing sandals, but they are the ones I've worn all summer. I walk everywhere in them, no problems. At some point, I rolled my ankle. Whatevs, that's happened before too. I'm always tripping over sidewalk cracks and my own feet too. Such is my life. It didn't even hurt so I went on about my life.

Wednesday night my feet were kinda sore but I walked for 3 hours up and down some kinda hilly streets so that's normal. When I woke up on Thursday though, my right foot hurt when I walked on it. It was slightly swollen, and maybe a little bruised (hard to tell since my skin is kinda translucent and you can see all my veins). it mostly only hurt when I walked on it so I figured it was just residual soreness.

Friday still hurts- possibly more than before. Defintely a bit swollen. Hm... but still the foot and not my ankle. I had full range of motion with no pain. Saturday the same. Hurts to walk but it's do-able so I'm doing it. But I'm getting a little bothered. I google some things (gotta love the internet) and see that it could be a broken bone. (the foot has 26 bones and many of them are small)

So I decide I want to get it looked at so I can either move on or get it treated. I decided on Urgent Care because
a)it's a weekend
b) I haven't seen my primary care doc in a while
c)If I need an xray they'll send me away for that anyway
d) I have insurance but it's not great and I don't want to have to pay twice

I remembered there was a new place close to one of our Subways that looked pretty legit (I have ZERO experience with Urgent care but we've all heard horror stories) and their website looked good (www.immediatecarewny.com) so I went today.

It was a good place- really nice on the inside- free coffee and water while you wait, nice soothing fountain and fishtank.. pretty spiffy. And it was FAST and friendly. I felt like a total dork telling them what happened.. Uh I was walking and I hurt my foot. LOL

The doc looked at my foot and poked and prodded and whateve.. then they took some x-rays which I think are totally cool. BONEs! Whee! I'm like a little kid.. haaha

So then the doc comes back and he says x-rays look clear- no fractures spotted so it's probably a sprain- strained ligaments. It technically counts as an ankle sprain (even though my ankle itself doesn't hurt at all) and just to rest it and it should heal up on its own. YAY! :)

Then he says that it looks like there's an old avulsion fracture (where the ligament pulls off a piece of bone) in a different part of my ankle and it looks old and healed but he found it interesting. He asked if I had ever hurt it before and I said no- remembering that the one time I tried snowboarding I jacked up my ankle, but honestly couldn't remember which one it was. Then he left and I thought about it and remembered that it was the right one but that was back in 2004. It hurt like a mug for quite a while but I just dealt with it because I didn't have insurance at the time and I'm not the kind of person who goes to the doctor about.. well much of anything really. It's just not who I am.

So he released me and said if I had any problems I could set up a follow-up apt but I should be good to go.

So there ya have it folks. I managed to sprain an ankle while walking, and apparently I have broken a bone before but "walked it off". Who knew?

broken, ouch, life, sam problems
