Had a thought but it hurt to I let it go

NOTICE TO BUFFALO SABRES:
YOU ARE NOT A FINESSE TEAM! YOU ARE NOT A FANCY TEAM! YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TALENT TO BE A FANCY TEAM.

Face it. You're gritty. You're tough. You're the guys who win games (wait, you win?) by mucking it up in the corners, paying the price in front of the net, TAKING SHOTS FOR PETE'S SAKE, and playing ballsout hockey. Or at least you used to be. Those were the Sabres I fell in love with. Not that prissy, namby pamby we're afraid to hit lest we break a nail and we won't take shots, just play witht he puck bull that you've been feeding us this season. Boys, this isn't a figure skating competition, nor is it ice dancing. Making pretty scratches will not help you win hockey games.

See. I don't know if I ever documented my love of the Sabres. It was a subtle thing. I am not from Buffalo, though I have grown to love the city and become fiercely protective of it. As for its hockey team, for years it was sort of a give or take thing, no emotion invested, just something to pass the time when I watned to check a game. Then I moved away and the Sabres suddenly got fun. (it was 05-06, the post-lockout season) I wasn't here for the regular season but I did buy real cable just to watch the playoffs because it was hockey time. And I watched this brilliant, scrappy, resilient Sabres club shut down the Flyer and Senators, then take the (eventual Champion) Hurricanes to 7 hard-fought games. All this even with missing several key players. They gutted it out. They played with everything they had and at the end, they lost but you knew they gave it every ounce of life in them. They just didn't have enough.

Then last year, we had some hopes for the team. they won some games early in the season. they won more games. they came from behind- again and again and again. They proved that down didn't mean out. And when they did lose, the players took it personally and played better the next night. They didn't take no for an answer and fought their way back into games they had no business winning. Because they played with heart. And this city responded. True, Buffalo is devastatingly loyal to its sports teams but for once it looked like it was worth it. Ha. The first round, and parts of the 2nd round of the playoffs were like that. They died against Ottawa though and that sseemed to carry over into this year. They lost a couple of players but the core of the team is still here. Apparently when Drury and Briere left, they took not only the goals, assists and leadership, but they took away the desperation and manliness of half the team.

These guys just don't play like they care whether or not they win. They cough up the puck constantly. There is Campbell who really wishes he was a forward instead of a D-man. Now don't get me wrong, I like it when the defence rushes the play, but only when it's SmART. He just ignores his responsibilies, and tries to bull his way to the net through 5 guys. No wonder he' s always losing the puck and getting caught up ice. Right now I would trade him for a dollar and a box of used pucks. And I'd throw Vanek in to pay for the pucks. What a waste of space. Tghere are no words to describe how sick of HIM I am. And our forwards just want to play with the puck, instead of DRIVING it to the net. The Charlie Conway triple-deke might work in the movies, but int he middle of a game, it's frustrating as hell. You HAVE teammates, use them! don't hog the puck when you have an open man. OR.. SHOOT THE DAMN PUCK when you have an opportunity. Stop hitting the post on every other shot. Pick your spots. Use your brains, I assume you have them?

And STAY OUT OF THE PENALTY BOX for cryin out loud. It doesn't help you.

I love hockey and for some stupid reason I still love the Sabres, but man I don't have to like 'em right now. Not until they turn into MEN again and stop being a bunch of wussies. They make me hurt.

Okay now that you've read that madness, I don't have much else to share except that it's numbingly cold outside. WOW> THank heavens for heat.

I'm tired today too. And slightly cranky though better than yesterday. ANd I didn't eat like a maniac today so that's good. Not a perfect food day but not terrible either. ANd I did exercise so yay for that.

That is all. Tune in later for something not so angry.

frustration, hockey, sabres
