So it is 6 a.m. and I haven't gotten to sleep yet. In my incessant pacing through the hallways, I realized that I might as well start a substantial coke habit since I suffer from most of the symptoms anyways. I never sleep, my nose is always running anyways (or I'm picking it until it begins to), and I find myself downing packs of sugar when I'm feeling lazy so why not just up the dosage anyways for a more efficient effect. Plus people who do coke are usually a lot cooler anyways, so I figure it to be a good investment.

I thought it would be nice to look up my school newspaper (that I used to write for) and read some articles that had been written over the summer while i was gone. I decided to read the entertainment section to see the quality of writing done since I was considering writing movie reviews this semester for the Daily Texan. I found only one review and it was for the movie Riding Giants, a surfer documentary done by the guy who did Dogtown and Z boys (one of the best skater movies I've seen).

Now I have always been hesitant to write movie reviews cuz I've read some great ones out there and never considered myself to be up to par. But I read this kid's review of Riding Giants and I don't know if it is me just being tired and ancy at 6 in the morning or me getting into coke addict mode, but I got really pissed off about this guys review. I mean it was just such a bullshit review. I am almost sure he never even saw the movie. But more importantly, he referred to the director as a "she". Now the director's name is Stacy and I admit one would assume its a girl, but if you know anything about movies and are especially reviewing this movie, you would have heard this name before or at least thought to look it up on IMDB. I mean its just such bullshit.

In any case, I found myself so angry and fuming about the review that the next thing I knew I blacked out. When I came to, I realized I was in my bedroom ripping all the tape out of my bar mitzvah video and cursing Jonathan Taylor Thomas. After I calmed down, I decided to write a letter to the editor of the paper, which went something like this:

"I would just like to state my dissapointment in the Texan for their severely lacking attempt at reporting any sort of efficient entertainment news to the campus community. While I accept that it is not a priority section, I do not understand what sort of budgeting and editorial decisions are made that force the entertainment section to be routinely shoved into the last page and limited to usually no more than one or two articles/reviews. I can learn to deal with such a disregard for culture. What I won't get used to is the inaccuracy and halfhearted reviews of movies that deserve a little more effort. I am referring to Sam Singh's review of "Riding Giants". In this review, Sam not only offered a very impersonal and canned response to the visually stimulating doc, but also embarassingly referred to the male director (Stacy Peralta) as a woman...numerous times. This would be an acceptable mistake, but the director is a known name and such an error ruins any credibility for a film critic. No one ever referred to Francis Coppola as the endearing mother to Sofia, and I don't think anyone should start. Next time, try doing a little research for the movies you review so that you may build a loyal fan base of readers."

DAMN it felt really good. I wish I could just write critical letters to editors for a living because I would be the only person in the world who trully loves his job. Fuck Cocaine.
