A FEW UPDATES ON MY NERD LIFE.
I'm obsessed with two new shows that've just started, so I'm back to that familiar frustration of waiting every week for the latest installment. The first, which should surprise no one, is the Gates, which in case you don't know, is about a gated community that seems to be bursting with vampires, werewolves, succubi, witches, other fun supernatural types, and a normal Cop With A Tragic Past who takes over as Chief of Police. So it's like Eureka got massively drunk and had a dirty threesome with Supernatural and Desperate Housewives, and The Gates is the result.
Mythology-wise, it's interesting! The beasts themselves are pretty familiar, but the pressures of reforming your wicked vampire ways and living in the suburbs, how a werewolf copes with dating in high school, and other takes on old legends are pretty interesting, which makes up for the general unoriginality. The acting isn't always so good, but damn are the actors pretty, so it's all okay! I find the main character cop a little too straight ahead, gung ho, I Will Do My Duty No Matter What, and his son is also a very cute potted plant, but his wife and daughter are really interesting and fun, and most of the other characters are interesting enough to pick up his slack. Plus! Vampires and werewolves and witches! In the suburbs! At bake sales! It's fantastic. Not the highest quality maybe, but so fun! And i'm only about 5 episodes in, but definitely willing to follow the rest of the season.

The other show is Rizzoli and Isles, and the fact that I'm watching it at all can be blamed entirely on Kate Beckett and Temperance Brennan, because that's pretty much who Rizzoli and Isles are: Rizzoli's the tough, wisecracking detective, and Isles is the incredibly intelleigent, socially awkard and fabulously dressed Medical Examiner. So they definitely run with the two female stereotypes here, and I was expecting the worst, but so far (the first three episodes) the show's done really well, I think. They're both interesting, funny, smart, and have a great relationship with each other (Rizzoli stays with Isles when she's freaked out and threatened by a serial killer) and with the men around them. Rizzoli has an incredibly annoying romantic plot through episodes 2 and 3, but that's really wrapped up at the end of the third episode, so hopefully there'll be no more of that. Not that I'm against romance in principle, this one was just dumb. But the other guys in homicide are fun and interesting, and they all interact really well.
Crime-wise, i'm reserving judgement. The first two episodes are very serial-killery, and the third one was the first episode to have a straightforward (and not overly interesting) murder plot. Having been spoiled by Castle I'm not so sure how that'll go, of if they'll improve, but I'm willing to watch more, and maybe even just for the characters if the plots are mediocre. Overall: it's not as good as Castle, but miles better than stuff like Law and Order or CSI (personally, I just like more character-driven stuff, I don't have personal issues with these shows). And although they're marketing it as a tomboy/pretty smart girl solve crimes type of show, I think the gender stuff is well done.
