Summary: There’s something to be said for solidarity in the face of the kind of anxiety that can only be brought on by family.
The tires squeal as they come to a stop behind an SUV that must’ve missed their exit, has the sudden desire to pull a U-turn and hold them up in the process.
“This isn’t going to go over well.”
Meredith has a map unfolded over her bent knees, useless when you consider he knows the terrain. They crossed the Iowa state line fifteen minutes ago. “Okay, well, the alternative is going alone.”
“And?” He taps his finger just above the horn.
“And there’s this thing called solidarity and I’ve heard it makes the crappy things we have to do less crappy.” She volunteers, glancing in the rearview mirror. “You can just go around him.”
Alex does and the guy makes his move a half-second later. “They’re going to think I’m sleeping with you.”
“Aaron knows me. I spent more time around him when he came than you did. He’ll just have to help set them straight.” She knows, though, that guys bring their girlfriends home - and vice-versa - and so saying this is a little out of the ordinary probably isn’t much of an exaggeration.
“Aaron doesn’t usually trust me on these things; he’s probably not going to trust you.”
“Why?”
“Mostly because I didn’t tell him I got married or divorced or anything else.”
“No,” she turns the radio down, “I mean why won’t he trust me?”
“Proximity.”
She rolls her eyes. “He trusts you where it matters.”
Alex has no reply for that and, instead, he picks up speed down the highway, relatively empty in the weekday afternoon light. She traces her finger along the line they’ve traveled straight up until he speaks again, “Iz and I were always going to make this trip.”
Meredith presses her lips together, says, “I know.”
It’s why she came, among other things.
