hello unexpected established relationship

---

“I fail to see how it is that we ended up in Arkansas.”

Penny doesn’t answer him, instead pulling him along behind her, hand on his wrist because hand-holding is foreign to him and at least he’s familiar with being dragged. Despite the fact that it’s after eight at night, they’ve got a flight in three hours-- red eye -- and she’s going to need coffee to cope with that. As for him, well, she’s crossing her fingers that he passes out on the plane but knows the likelihood of that occurring, due to his vast issues with air travel, is slim to none.

Maybe she’ll get lucky.

“Apparently neither do you.”

She huffs a breath, both at his comment and the line at the small coffee place in the airport. They aren’t the only ones gearing up for a late-night flight. “Sheldon, honey, how many times do we have to go through this? They diverted us because of bad weather.”

“It is not the reason for the diversion that I am unclear about. It’s the choice of location.” In that respect, he has the makings of a point. Even though it’s only the next state over. But she doesn’t get a chance to even come up with a reply, before he starts up again. “And could you please restrain yourself from such frequent use of terms of endearment as a way to be condescending.”

“It’s not…” she stops herself. Really, it is. Habit, she decides.

“Penny, honey,” he mimics, perfectly, and her thoughts come to a quick halt. That’s not a word he uses unless he’s putting it in his tea, and she knows he’s mocking her but it still comes as a shock to her system. A strange shock. Sheldon, however, is just as oblivious as normal, and manages to mistake her reaction as one of disgust or possibly contempt. “You see my point.”

She bites back the ‘no, Sheldon, as usual we are on completely different planes of existence’ or some variation of it, in favor of not having this discussion at all. “Fine, Sheldon,” there’s extra emphasis on his name now, “I’ll just stick with your name.”

He smiles, genuine, when he says, “Thank you, Penny.”

There’s a beat where she lets him savor that supposed win. Long enough for them to move up in the coffee line that only she really needs to be in. And then, “Or, you know, Moonpie.”

Penny looks away before he can fix her with the glare to end all glares, and she lets him do it until the point where he’s on the hairy edge of doing that twitching thing. Then she turns her eyes back on him, combats his glare with her one-hundred watt smile and internally rejoices when the glare starts to fade in intensity.

It’s moments like these, when she remembers that she has some level of power over him that no one else does, that make up for some of the ridiculousness of being in a relationship with a man who has the barest understanding of emotions and only a slightly better understanding of social practices and behaviors.

In line, six people from the front, she allows her caffeine-deprived, jet-lagged self to lean against him, as subtly as possible, and counts to three while he stiffens and then relaxes against her, a hand tentatively coming to rest on her back as she sighs.

*flails* That last paragraph just made my night, gah, so perfect! I love this so much! Especially the fact that Penny's the only one who has that little bit of power over him, because omg SO true!
This is lovely and made me grin like a fool, thank you hon :D

Honestly, she's the only one who even tries to exert any power over him. She tries to make him change, but in beneficial ways. And I like that she bothers. I like that she cares enough. And I like that sometimes, he goes with it, slowly and subtly.

Anyways, I'm SO glad you liked it! I've been debating what to write since I got the prompt and finally just went for it tonight.

Agreed, that last paragraph is definitely made of win. It just sums up everything that works about their relationship. :)
